Anthrocon--what to bring
It's about a month before Anthrocon in Pittsburgh. If anyone in the Dojo is planning on going, and would like me to bring something specific--that last UY comic to complete a collection, pin, original art, etc--let me know by answering this posting, or sending me an e-mail.
I'll be there Friday through Sunday morning.

Hi Stan,
I'm very interested in going, though I still need to make arrangements. If I'm only coming for one day, is there a better day to come?
I'd very much like to purchase some art from you, but have no idea what you bring to these things (or what the price range is). I know you don't sell original comic art, but I'd love to make a major Usagi purchase.
I'm also hoping you'll be in the mood to sign a few comics. I won a set of autographed Dark Horse issues purchased from Gary's Bookstore a few months back and have a few unsigned issues in the bunch.

I'll be there all day Friday and Saturday (unless something unforseen happens as it did last year). Which ever day is more convinient for you, though more events tend to take place on Saturday. I will also be there Sunday morning, but may spend much of that time talking and visiting with friends.shaxper wrote:Hi Stan,

I do not sell published story pages, but I do have a lot of con drawing, such as those that are published on the back covers of the comics. I also have cover originals, as well as art for endpapers, signature plates, etc.
I'll sign whatever you have. If there is a line though, I may limit the number of items signed at one time. But you can always line up again, or come back when it is not as busy.
I will also be glad to do free quick sketches, but I do have a few rules:
1--I limit them to one a person per convention
2--you must supply your own paper
3--it must be personalized
4--I do not take request for particular characters or situations
If you want to commission a drawing, do so as early as possible--even e-mail me before the con.

Sounds good! I would definitely be interested in some art and/or original covers!
What are your terms for commissioning a piece of art (especially considering that this is less than a month away)? I would love to commission a piece, but realize you are very busy.
Don't worry about the comics I'd like you to sign. There are only four or five, and I'll gladly come back to bother you later if it's busy

Just e-mail me what you want, and we'll discuss it. Even after it is done, there is no obligation to buy it if you don't like it.shaxper wrote:

However, if it is very complicated it will take awhile. That kite festival drawing that Wily Pueo (Dave) commissioned took about three years before he finally got it.

A few other things I'd love for you to bring to Anthrocon, if you can:
The Radio Comics Art of Usagi Yojimbo #2
All three Usagi sketchbooks
The Spanish Usagi sketchbook
Drawing the Line vol. 1
And do you have copies of Dark Horse Presents Annual 1999, Dark Horse Maverick 2001, Wizard #97 and 153, or any other work containing semi-obscure Usagi stories? I have all the regular comic book issues, but little else.

I sometimes do short Usagi stories for other publishers and projects, such as the cancer benefit book Drawing the Line, or a one pager in Oni Presents. These stories are reprinted in the Usagi Yojimbo books, so you are not missing out on these stories if you only buy the trades. The four page A Cooking Lesson which was in Drawing the Line will be in the next UY trade paperback collection.Fanfan wrote:or any other work containing semi-obscure Usagi stories?could you tell me more about these semi-obscure Usagi stories ?
As Shaxper said, he buys the comic book issues, so has missed these stories.

Believe me, I keep thinking about switching to the trades (I almost talked myself into buying all 19 from Heritage Source tonight), but the size and lack of letter columns keeps preventing me from going through with it.
Any chance that Fantagraph and Dark Horse will ever print larger sized tpbs? If there were, I'd buy all 19 in hardback on the spot.

Actually, in the last few pages of "Demon Mask" I noticed there are some short Usagi stories along with some that resemble a newspaper Sunday Strip. I was wondering what those were!Stan Sakai wrote: I sometimes do short Usagi stories for other publishers and projects, such as the cancer benefit book Drawing the Line, or a one pager in Oni Presents. That was the first of two stories which were published in the Dark Horse Comic's tabloid or newspaper sized promotional flyer entitled "Dark Horse Extra". Two Usagi Yojimbo stories were published in it, both in four part segments, as well as a promotional poster for the Demon Mask trade. The second story was reprinted in Book 17 – Duel at Kitanojitayocham wrote:Actually, in the last few pages of "Demon Mask" I noticed there are some short Usagi stories along with some that resemble a newspaper Sunday Strip. Dark Horse Extra
Feb/2000 issue # 20 Tsuru part 1
Mar/2000 issue # 21 Tsuru part 2
Apr/2000 issue # 22 Tsuru part 3
May/2000 issue # 23 Tsuru part 4
Jan/2001 issue # 31 Usagi Yojimbo: Demon Mask (poster)
Mar/2002 issue # 45 A Lesson in Courtesy part 1 (featuring “Young” Usagi)
Apr/2002 issue # 46 A Lesson in Courtesy part 2 (featuring “Young” Usagi)
May/2002 issue # 47 A Lesson in Courtesy part 3 (featuring “Young” Usagi)
Jun/2002 issue # 48 A Lesson in Courtesy part 4 (featuring “Young” Usagi)
Dark Horse Extra usually had two pages of comicstrips (similar in format to those in a newspaper), a poster, and a page showing / listing the current month's comic book releases.

I don't know much about Pittsburgh, except it's the home of the Steelers and there a neat Natural History Museum. Daughter Hannah and I are planning to see the Beauty and the Beast stage musical while we're there.luger wrote:Hi. Just to turn it around. I'm a local in Pittsburgh.
