Mifune Toshiro Alert!

Post by takematsu »

Unfortunately, this only applies to those with access to Canadian cable TV (that's what, at least two of us): Red Sun, the western avec samurai, is on tonight (mar.6) and in the very early hours of tomorrow on Lone Star network. There's some guy named Bronson in it as well, I think....

I've seen "Red Sun". It's not a bad little effort, for a "spaghetti western". The only bright spot in it is Mr. Mifune's dignified performance. He was a class act all the way. But, I'll stick to "Yojimbo","Sanjuro","Band of Assassins","Throne of Blood" and"Sword of Doom".{Just to name a few of his most memorable roles.} Abayo!!

Don't discount his non-period piece pictures, like High and Low, and Stray Dog. They are just as good as the samurai pictures, especially for those of you who haven't seen any Kurosawa pictures that aren't set in a samurai backround. I also recommend No Regrets for our Youth, if you can actually manage to find a copy.

Have to mention one of his most widely viewed "western" roles in the mini-series Shogun...

Quite so-- watching it is mainly done to fill the canon. Turns out it was on 3 times, and I didn't tape it once.

Bronson: Can you cut a fire-break?
Mifune: <thinks> Can you recite the story of Yamato Dake and the Tsurugi no Kusanagi? Sure am glad the writer gave you credit for the idea <thought ends; speaks next aloud> Hai!
