Wow, a Samurai Hulk will be awesome! Hulk is one of the only main comics I've stuck with though the years!
It's good that the Marvel House of ideas is getting good creators on thier books these days.
Now if only they brought on Sergio Aragones on for a book again. A "Howard the Duck Massacres Marvel" one shot or something....

Samurai Hulk Idea...
I am not sure if you have done this already, but I love the whole idea of the Hulk being a cursed character. He has no control over the monster he becomes, and is mostly unaware of the destruction he has caused until he has been stopped.
It might be interesting to have him begin as a samurai who is looking for a way to best serve his master and in doing so makes a pact for strength with a god or a demon. In the process he not only destroys the invading army but everything in his way. Even his own people. Upon waking he casts away his swords and flees the battlefield. Going back to his village for salvation he loses control and decimates it as well with only his hands.
Of course, in the end he would have to either end it himself or find a way to strike a balance between his destruction and his peace. An interesting end could be that he could move into the earth itself and become the quakes that plague Japan. A cursed man who now IS the natural world.
Hmmmm, just an idea.

That is a great idea for a story, but I just had 8 pages to work with.Tinlantern wrote:I am not sure if you have done this already, but I love the whole idea of the Hulk being a cursed character. Marvel has finally "officially" announced their Marvel Underground project, described as a three part anthology series under the title of "Strange Tales MAX" with a release date of September 2009 for the first issue.
Here is a link to Heidi MacDonald's write-up about it over at The Beat
And, of course, the news has also spread to CBR and Newsarama
Unfortunately, there is no mention as to which issue Stan Sakai's Samurai Hulk story will appear in, yet.

I'm very curious to see what Perry Bible Fellowship creator Nicholas Gurewich will do with Marvel characters.

Could he rampage over Joe Quasada while he is threatening the country side of Japan, while a shogun Stan Lee stands in the background shouting EXCELSIAR!!!
BTW Mr. Sakai did you or anyone in here read the Marvel Mangaverse that Antarctic Press did a few years back for Marvel. I found it to be an interesting interpretation of the Marvel Universe.

Hulk
Could you make the hulk story like part of your Yokai type story lines? His transformation I'm sure would be considered just like in that time period almost like a demonic type posession as viewed by a person of that time period.

That is a really cool cover!! I will have to make sure I get one at my comic shop when it comes out. I really like the lay out with the Hulk in the center just plowing through. Also very nice color scheme. so will there be a possible "Easter Egg"/cameo of a certain samurai rabbit in one of the backgrounds of this short?
Frankly, Stan, after so many years of USAGI YOJIMBO, it's strange seeing you draw humans at all...Stan Sakai wrote:Thank you for posting the interview, Steve. As you can tell, it was conducted quite awhile ago. The writer sent me a couple of new questions last week to update a few things.
This is the first time I saw the color pages. It's strange seeing all my characters with "human" skin tones.
