The Neatorama post says that the picture was taken at the Burning Man festival.

Burning Man is an annual festival that takes place in the middle of the Nevada desert. They create an entire community there for about a week. The celebration culminates in the burning of a giant wickerman.

Friend and artist Carol Lay was planning to attend this year's event.
