Fancomic idea

Post by ram-raider »

Hi all

I'm new around these parts and to UY too! I got hooked all of two days ago when, I can't remember how, I found it on the net and have already done the Dark Horse previews to death! Definately going to look out for this one.

Anyway's I've had an idea for a fancomic as such and just wanted to show the few initial sketches I've done.

The characters currently have no names. The main original character is the ram in the top right of the second image. The rat is one of the main adversaries and is scheming against him, while the rest are simply brain burps for other characters.

Another go at the ram and the rat. Also put Usagi in and the second main schemer, the cat at the bottom.

Very interesting....

There has been a lot of fan art posted here on the UY Dojo forum, as well as a bit of fan fiction shared as well. It is interesting to finally see someone interested in bringing the two mediums together and to combined them in a fan produced graphic story. Your rough sketches show a lot of potential and I am looking forward to seeing some of your artwork that is more finished.

The first hurdle you must cross is aquiring the approval of Stan Sakai himself, who owns all rights to Usagi Yojimbo. I would imagine that you need to convince him that the story is something he would approve of, and that the artwork will be appropriate for all ages, as well as showing attention and accuracy to the details of the setting.

Usagi has appeared in a very limited number of stories drawn by anyone besides Stan, Dave Garcia and Peter Laird being a couple of the artists allowed to borrow the character. I think it would be cool to have a dojo member added to that small and exclusive group.

Abayo...

Hmm... Technically, wouldn't Stan Sakai have to approve every single fan-art or fanfic, according to that logic? Everyone can do a non-commercial fanart, even if it's a comic. Of course, it would be nice and kind to ask Sensei for his opinion, but still, it's not legally required, as long as a proper disclaimer is added.

And interesting idea, ram-raider - 'tho it cheers me a bit that a 2-day old fan can be that devoted to UY...

Thanks for the input guys. I'll definately run by Stan Sakai once I have something more presentable.

Here are a few more character ideas.

Interesting sketches. You have talent! Have you ever thought of creating your own comic (non-Usagi fan work)?
