General discussion about Usagi Yojimbo, the comics, the stories, the characters, collectibles, TV appearances, Stan Sakai, Space Usagi, Nilson & Hermy, and all other related topics.
Hello,
I've been watching some of the items on ebay USA, and I'm tempted to buy a sketch book there, although I don't know yet what to expect in it...
And furthermore, I don't know how much to pay for it; even if I got it for 10 $, 15 $ for shipping to Germany is an awful lot (in comparison)....
So, the questions that bug me are: What's the content of the sketch books (well, yes, sketches, I figure.... )?
Is there any other source to get them (other than ebay, that is)?
Maybe some of you guys could help me decide...
Thanks in advance
Thomas

There's also the Spanish sketchbook as well from 2004, with a lot of great artwork from previous comics featured, quite a bit of character sketching and an original 4 pager "young Usagi" story at the end. I think Stan has some of them left, he had a few on his table at last year's SDCC.
With a breeze comes a storm, but then you'll all be washed away...
I didn't even know about this. I'd love to buy one of those "spanish sketchbooks"if they're different from the 3 US editions. Is there a place where I might be able to pick one up?
The Spanish sketchbooks were offered a couple years ago and Stan had a few at the 2005 SDCC. I don't believe it was ever offered in the states. The publisher appears to be AEAC (Asociacion Espanola de Amigos del Comic) and was put together for Expocomic 2004. http://www.expocomic.com/
They are completely different in appearance from the US versions. Actually, they are larger and feature a high-quality color cover (See scan below).
The book is about 80 pages long and features quite a few black and white covers, pin-ups, and portfolio drawings. There are a few great Usagi/Tomoe pieces in it as well.
I tried browsing a few Spanish websites, but could not find any for sale. I know they are a limited edition, and may be tough to find...
The UY Sketchbooks are a little smaller than an UY comic book, 24 pages plus covers, and black and white. The first two featured misc. artwork, cover roughs, convention drawings, and deleted pages. The third one had a new 10 page story, and the steps I took to create it--idea, outline, thumbnail drawings, and finishes. There is also a few pages of an abandoned story inspired by the Redwall series.
All three books are signed with a head sketch of Usagi and numbered with an edition of 750. They are available through me at signings, or from Bud Plant. These are for the serious collectors who would like an inside look at the creation of a comic series.
The Spanish Sketchbooks were printed for my appearance at Madrid's Expocomic '04. It is about 64 or 80 pages, black and white, square bound, with a color cover. It has covers, con sketches, endpaper art, and other drawings, most of them first published elsewhere. There is also the Cooking Lesson short story featuring Young Usagi and Katsuichi, which was reprinted in one of the trades. But this sketchbook includes the story outline and thumbnail drawings. This book is in English and Spanish. Because of the very limited number of these available, this is not offered through any dealer or distributor. You will have to pick them up from me at a signing, or have someone send you one.
Hey Roel,
If you have trouble locating one, let me know and I'll see what I can work out. If anything I'll send you my copy and pick another up from Stan when I see him again.

Thanks for the offer. If you can pick one up from Stan for me that would be great! I wouldn't want to take your copy away from you and I can wait. I'm in no rush at all but would definitely want a copy. Please just let me know how much to pay you. Thanks my friend.

Hey, ehm, Todd...
I'd like to ask exactly the same favor, if it's not stretching the bounds of Dojo-friendship too far...
Many thanks in advance
Thomas

Roel, don't worry about paying for it. On me. I can send it out with the DVD.
Thomas, I wish I had another copy, but I've only got one in my personal collection. Perhaps with Stan's permission I could make the content available on the Dojo in one of the galleries so everyone can enjoy it. It would take quite a bit of scanning though, and I may damage a copy of the book in the process! To tell you the truth, most of the content is already available here on the Dojo...it's just the exclusive content that I would need to scan...

Stan, if you're reading this, let me know!
Don't worry about Thomas. I sent him a pm.
I can't give permission to reproduce the entire books online. It would not be fair to those who paid for it, and not to me, who still has a bunch of books to sell.
Hello all you guys,
thank you all for your concern; I'm truely overwhelmed by all your replies to my newbie-question.
Plus I think it's Christmas already....
