UYD EVENT ON FRIDAY!!!!

Post by Todd Shogun »

Okay it sounds like FRIDAY will more or less work for most people, so I can pretty much say that is when it will be. I haven't gotten any replies against it, so it's a go! More info on a time soon.....or check Stan's booth on Thursday!

Back from the Con!!!

Post by Todd Shogun »

The SDCC rocked once again... but perhaps too much on Saturday!! Easily the largest attendance yet. My weekend: Dojo Gathering on Friday! Got to meet several newer Dojo members from this forum -- cool! ...Got to see Angelina Jolie, Rob Zombie, Hugh Jackman, and Halle Barry in person... got to see all the Hobbits (sans Pip) and Golum from LoTR once again...got the 20th Annimversary World of the Dark Crystal book and had it signed by Brian Froud... picked up my con-exclusive Thundarr the Barbarian action figure with glow in the dark sword!!!...got the Mospeada and Macross Japanese DVD box sets...got to check out cool Star Wars, Robotech, Spiderman 2, LoTR, comic book website, and other panels.... all in all and great con!!!... unfortunatley, the rumor that Tounian spread about Orlando Bloom appearing was just that.. a rumor...!

It was nice seeing Stan, Sharon, and the usual suspects around Stan's booth at SDCC. I picked up a UY cover and a pencil piece from Stan on Wednesday night and traded all my Mike Zeck art plus a little cash for a Watchmen page in the last couple hours of the convention on Sunday--that was all the original art buying/trading I did for entire con. Spent the rest of my cash on toys (particularly a ton of Stikfas figures and the Mattel Batman exclusive figure, which I would love to trade for a couple 14-inch Stikfas promos); a bunch of assorted T-shirts, a few martial arts movies (including Hero with Jet Li, released last year I believe--if you liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, you'll definitely like Hero); and assorted comics, graphic novels, and books. I made it to a few panels, with the most entertaining being Quick Draw! , Futurama (which included a screening of an unaired episode, with Matt Groening and a few of the voice actors, writers, etc, in attendance), and Cartoon Voice Actors (there was a great reading of a Pinky and the Brain episode). I also took in a few independent films. Two were kind of blah, but Gamers, a movie about RPGers, was hilarious.

Again, it was good to see Stan, Sharon, Todd, Glennosuke, Robert, et al. Hope everyone there had a good time.

Hey, it ain't my fault, I was just passing on information I heard from a friend with a list. That list had to bunk, cause not only did you mention Orlando Bloom never showed up, Quentin Tarantino never showed up, as the list said. I just wont believe the list next time.

No problemo dude. Maybe he was invited... they typically never announce who's going to appear until after they get 100% confirmation from the studios. Orlando was probably asked to appear, as I'm sure many others were... but it just didn't happen. Only Sean Astin was schduled to appear, but Elijah and company ended up making surprise appearances once again... it's always a guessing game.

great time with UYD!

Post by Leonardo-san »

It was great to see everyone, for that hour we visited on Friday.
:D
The new Usagi TideMark calendar rocks!

As a member of the LotR official Fan Club, I was very saddened by the behavior of the people in line for the signing. I didn't make it into the New Line panel, and got in line early for the signing. It turned into a huge mess. Very sad.
At least I met Andy Serkis on Friday, and got a 30-second meeting with Sean Astin on Sunday when he was still signing. I'd met Dom and the others last year.

The other stuff I did was great fun. Loved meeting the Farscape actors, and that was a great panel. Met up with Kevin Eastman as usual. Michael Dooney was there--a wonderful surprise! Met LeSean from the new DreamWave comic--very nice guy! Met Pat Lee who did the alternate cover for the DW TMNT #1. Met the colorist Rob, at Fleer.

I still HOPE that next year, Usagi will be part of the program book so we can contribute art to it.
And looking forward to the next UYD meet-up I can attend.

Michael Dooney

Darn, I didn't know Michael Dooney was at the con. I would have asked him for a small commission piece--I really dig the Space Usagi toy model designs he did.

I didn't know, until after the con, that Mike was there. I would have made an effort to see him as well. If you like his Space Usagi toy, you should have seen his sculpt for "Space Gen".

As for Dooney, he was quite tricky to find.
A couple of my friends met him at the Playmates booth on Thursday. They told us, and we ran back but he was gone. The really nice folks staffing the Playmates booth told us Dooney was expected back in the morning.
So we popped in, and no Dooney. Then while at another signing or event, we missed him.
:(
Day 3, got him! :D We basically camped at the booth and played the new TMNT computer game--much fun!
I hadn't seen him since the 96 or 97, so it was an awesome surprise for the convention experience. I'm sorry you all seem to have missed him. He would show up for an hour or so at Playmates, sign a bunch of stuff for giveaways and wander off.
But if you really want to get try to get in touch with him, I would suggest going to the official TMNT site: www.ninjaturtles.com and send along an email.

Lastly, thanks again Stan! It's always great to see you and any of your family that is on hand. We are fortunate as fans to have your support.

The sculpted piece and the detailed drawings for the Space Gen piece are what caught my attention on his site some two or three years ago. I'd love to get a similar rendition of Gen and/or some of the other UY characters from him, something like a mock cover. Perhaps, I can approach him next year if he makes it to SDCC again.

We had a great time at San Diego, but I spent most of the con at my booth meeting fans, doing free sketches, and selling art and books to pay for my con space. I did make it to Artists' Alley once--about a quarter mile away--to visit with some friends and to meet Alex Saviuk who pencils the Spider-Man Sunday pages that I letter. The con is so large that I missed a few friends that I normally see, like Bill Stout and Dave Stevens. I did meet a few artists that I had never met before. I got a sketch of Hagar the Horrible and Usagi from Chris Brown. It turns out he's a bit of a fan as well. I did buy one piece of original art--a small oil painting by Lark Pien.

The official attendance numbers won't be released until next week, but preliminary estimates make it somewhere in the 70,000s.

Yow! 70,000... but judging by the turn out on Saturday I'm not surprised. Speaking of missing pro's, I noticed that Steve Gallacci was not in attendance this year... probably a first for him in a great while. I wonder what is up... Also, Stan does Kim Thompson from Fanta ever make it out to SDCC? I've never had the opportunity to meet him...

One thing I noticed at this year's con was the abundance of off the wall toys. Stan... I had an idea while looking at all the "super-posables", "ugly dolls", lightsaber replicas and such... what about a Tokage toy line? we could have stuffed tokage, posable tokage... think of the possibilities!!!! :)

Kim Thompson

Kim was definitely at SDCC this year--I got a couple books signed by Mark Evanier at the Twomorrow's booth on Sunday and Kim happened to be there and exchanged some words with Mark.

Steve was out in Philadelphia for Anthrocon, which was the same weekend. I was asked to be a guest there for the past few years but there had always been a conflict. I will be there in 2004, since the funny animal con is scheduled for two weeks before San Diego--in fact, the entire family was invited.

As Wily said, Kim was there. He's lost a lot of weight in the past couple of years and looks better than ever. He's been in contact with Dark Horse to do some cross-promoting for Usagi's 20th.
