Usagi Yojimbo #100 Discussion (MAJOR SPOILERS)

Post by Todd Shogun »

Okay people, I already got my copy of UY 100 and couldn't wait until it was released on Wednesday to start up a topic on it. All I can say is, awesome! The issue was indeed a roast of Stan, Usagi (literally), and his comics. I won't go into any specific details, but it was funny as hell, especially Mike Richardson/Rick Geary's piece. Everyone roasted Stan and Usagi pretty good, but it was great to see Stan get his revenge through the pages he contributed. I was surprised by how well the story flowed together. I was assuming multiple stories, but this is just one great long story drawn by multiple people.

Speaking of surprises, Stan included a slew of cameos in this issue, including a few Dojo Members! Here is what Stan sent me...see if you can recognize yourselves....

Page 9, Panel 2: Cynlee, Kim "Leonardo" Garvin, Fanfan, Kari "Vikingbabe", Todd Shogun.

Page 17, Panel 1: John Higashi, Glenn Masuda, Adriel "Grusagi" Serna, Patricia "Usagi" Heise, Robert "Zorak-san" Kassebaum

Page 23, Panel 1: Gary Nishimura, Thomas F., Steve Hubbell, Gordon "Go" Smith

Page 29, Panel 1: Eduardo Risso, Editor Diana Schutz, Julie Eng, Suley Fattan

Pages 30-31: Mike Richardson, Scott Shaw!, Editor Diana, Bobby London, Floyd Norma, Mike "Captain Jack" Kazaleh, Sergio Aragones, Hannah Sakai, Matthew Sakai, Sharon Sakai, Mayhem (above Sharon), Todd Shogun, Kari "VikingBabe"

I have to apologize, because I am not a characaturist and I'm horrible at drawing likenesses--much less from memory and old photos.

I wanted to keep it as a surprise, so just a couple of Dojo members knew about this beforehand. Thanks for keeping your mouths shut, guys.

Yeah, It's a good thing I don't know what you fans look like or you would have really spoiled it for me.

So Usagi dies in a BBQ, huh? :)

I'm looking forward to reading it.

Peace,

I think it will be very funny, in deed; looking at a comic and seeing your own face (or Stan's interpretation of it) looking back at you...

 ...wait a minute.... Thomas F !!

I can't wait to get issue 100!! The honor....
Greetings from overseas

You did a great job IMHO. Most of the time the cameo'd Dojo Members are looking up at the stage, so how accurate can you get? Regardless, the likenesses were captured. Kari recognized herself quite quickly. And I was amazed at how simple Go's caricature was, but captured his likeness almost perfectly. Uncanny. The others were also easily recognized, at least the Dojo members I've actually seen!

It was an awesome surprise. Who were the Dojo Members who knew beforehand?

Complete surprise for me ! i am really curious to see that... in fact i never saw most of the other dojo members (except Thomas and some photos of you Todd and our famous cosplayer), so i am really curious to see you all !

but at least it will not be the first time i will see myself sketched, because Stan was kind enough to sketch me on paper tablecloth in some restaurant (i have to scan it !)

PS : but to see a "Viking" like me in Usagi must be somekind of weird....

Have to say that's a great gesture by Stan to include many of the people here in the panels :)

Have to wait for my copy of #100 to turn up though...

Man, I hate my local funny book provider. They ordered exactly four copies of this. Four! And they're all gone and now they'll have to back-order it. Gah...

Just read this issue. Great send-up. I especially enjoyed Guy Davis's contribution but I'm a sucker for a Lone Goat & Kid story.

I think so, that's what they call a "celebrity roast" in the USA. It doesn't really exist in France, and we haven't got a French word for that. I found difficult to translate it in the DH interview.
