San Diego

Post by Stan Sakai »

Yesterday hotel reservations for San Diego opened at 9 am. I was online at that time, but did not get my first, second, third, or, I would imagine, my fourth, fifth, or sixth choices. I did get a room more than a mile away, and, after reading various discussion boards, I'm glad I got that. (See my Live Journal for a detailed account.) Heidi MacDonald estimates that there are less than 7,000 rooms in the vicinity of the Convention Center, and there were 125,000 individual attendees last year. Well, rooms will open up in a few months as the attendees cancel double bookings, and the hotels release more rooms.

I received my notice that I did get my corner booth. It is 4906, I believe the same location as last year.

I'll open a new SD thread when we draw closer to the event.

I booked mine last October. I got really lucky and found a place less than $100/night just north of the Gaslamp. I booked it for all 4 nights Wed-Sat. The hotels are starting to catch on...

That was insane!!
There must have been an attack by the Neko Ninja on the hotel website.
It took me 47 minutes to get through on my second choice hotel, on my 4th entering of a credit card number to get the reservation number to confirm I had gotten a room reserved!
I've heard a lot of people complain about it.

Anyway, I will be there. And yes, I will bring the Leo costume again. This year, I can wear it on the con floor to visit the booth.

I imagine it's like that every year. It was last year when trying to book. Thankfully my first choice hotel (picked on the balance between cost and distance to the con) had the rooms available for all nights that I wanted. Process took about half an hour and I was on there as soon as it opened (just glad it was 5pm here, right before I leave for home) on a work network megafast connection. Lagged like anything but got there in the end.
With a breeze comes a storm, but then you'll all be washed away...

I was just at Heidi MacDonald's column The Beat at Publishers Weekly:

http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/

She was talking about the hotel situation, and posted a link to "the same yearly misery and kvetching over how it used to be." I thought, "That's all we need...another old coot complaining about the con." I was surprised when it linked onto my own Live Journal.

The Heidi thing, the link...I am sorry, I am laughing. But I shouldn't be.
:D

And if there was one of those who have made those awesome Usagi costumes we've seen that could make it to the Con, or someone that could make one in time for the Con...ooh. That would be beyond awesome.

I wanted to let the fellow UY fans going to San D Con know....
I may have to cancel this year. My friend that was going to share the hotel room with me has had to cancel. I have so far been unable to find a replacement roomie, and I can't afford the room on my own. The hotel cancellation date is coming up soon, so it's not looking good for my being there this year.

We're sorry to hear that. We hope you are able to find a new roomie. It wouldn't be a real SD Con without you.

Agreed. If anyone out there needs a roomie or has some interest in attending SDCC and wants a good shot to share a room without having to pay full price for one, then let Kim know!

I'll talk to others, see if they'd be willing to take your friend's place if you're cool with that. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've been busy living it up over at Star Wars Celebration 4 here in LA. Awesome convention by the way.

@ Todd: What about your newborn child? Did you bring it to that con, too; dressed up as Yoda perhaps?
Greetings from overseas

I wanted to bring him but felt he'd still be to young. Surprisingly enough there were quite a few babies here dressed up even. I'm actually in the Costume Pageant right now as I write this and a few parents brought out a few babies dressed up as Star Wars characters, including Vader and Yoda.
