Groo vs Usagi: Who would win?

Post by Stan Sakai »

That is the title of my piece for the Comic-con International: San Diego's souvenir book. It is a 7 panel gag story I just finished today.

For those not going to Comic-con, we'll probably reprint the page in the UY comic as we did for the piece I did for Usagi's 20th anniversary in 2004.

LOLLOLLOLLOL!!

*places bet on Usagi*

Seriously-- all Usagi-san would have to do is yell "cheese dip" (will ANYONE besides me remember that Groo loved cheese dip) and then he could easily deal with Groo-- just don't call him a mendicant!!!!!

As I'm not able to go, either someone can please pick me up a spare magazine at the Con, or yes, reprint the panel! :D

Speaking of Groo, Mark Evanier has posted an "unofficial" announcement to the Groop mailing list concerning the possible release of some new Groo stories and an anniversary special later this year.

Now, if they can just get Groo on the cover of Previews sometime this year to celebrate his 25th anniversary........

We've been announcing new Groo projects for the last three years. I have yet to see a new page to letter.

However, the Groo meets Conan seems to be greenlighted. Or it will be, as soon as Bill Stout, the artist of the Conan segments, signs the contracts.

Now this is a difficult choice... Groo or Usagi? This is the most complicated question since "Ryu or Terry Bogard?". xD I'll go for a draw between them. ;P

*Let's hope we can see that 7-panel gag here in Spain ^^U*

It'd be a draw. They'll duel for 21 straight pages across an entire

village (ala 'The Quiet Man'), then end up exhausted. Too tired to

continue, they'll join each other for drinks and food at the tavern.

And have a laugh trying to remember why the fight started !!!!

...or, they'd be thrown out of the ruined town, hunted by the townspeople with shouts like: "Kill Groo! Grill Usagi! Slay both of them!!"

Both have....

Strengths and weakness in common

Yet difference in approach

(Although still on UY Book #2 and have a lot of UY updating to enjoy. Left off on Critters and Albedo issues. Have not read all Groo either though. ABout to issue 50 with some missing in between and a few later issues. )

Cynlee.....Certainly remember the cheese dip!...and mendicant. Good memory.

Here's another illustration picturing Usaig and Groo about to go at it. Sergio did this for me when I saw him at Wondercon. I've been so busy that this is the only time I had to post it.

I gave Sergio a photocopy of my gag when I saw him on Thursday, and he loved it.

CAPS (Comic Art Professional Society), a cartoonists group I am a member of, sent in a jam-drawing by 31 of our members (including Mort Walker). A second Groo drawing that I did is right in the front of the mob of Groos.

I think Groo has to win. Despite all of Usagi's skill and technique (Groo, of course, possesses none), Groo does have a twisted sort of Fate with a capital T that follows him through his adventures. There are certain inevitabilities when Groo fights, and one of them is that he'll win. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins entirely by accident :)
