Hello from Japan,
Using the free internet at the hotel. But I‘m not used to the keyboard.
We`ve been in a different city every day so far. I`ll report when I get back to the states. We arived in Tokyo last night.
All food is good. Getting a little tired of raw fish, believe it or not.

Peace,
maka

You are right, the cherry blossoms in Ueno Park are in full bloom. I thought we would be in Japan a week too early but fortunately not. We went to Ueno yesterday and it was beautiful.ellahrairah wrote:Ii naaaaaa....
I didnt think about it before but the cherry blossoms must be in full bloom. Do you have any plans to go to Ueno park. I recommend going on a weekday afternoon though....
Its about 5:30 a.m. We have about a 1/2 day left before we head back to LAX. It was again a trip of a lifetime.
Teaser: Your favorite rabbit bodyguard actually made the trip with us this year. Hopefully, I`ll be able to post pictures sometime this week.
Peace, maka

Hello UY Fans,
We took over 400 pictures and Usagi made it into about 40 (10%). Here are those pictures.

I will make a video (I took DV as well) but that will be much later. The quarter begins tomorrow and I'll be very busy for a while.
Peace,
maka

wow that's awesome Maka-san. those food shots have me drooling on my keyboard... even the cheapest breakfast looked yummy. Was that chawanmushi in one of those shots? I've made it a few times but never had it out. Man I'd love to go to Japan, it looks really kool and really beautiful as well... tho' a lot of Victoria looks like Ueno Park right now. Love Usagi with the easter bunnies and chopsticks... and totoro ear pickers - what an odd product! Great shots. Thanks for sharing them with us!

It was chawanmushi. Is it difficult to make? It's prepared in an oven, right?morna-san wrote: Was that chawanmushi in one of those shots? I've made it a few times but never had it out. . . . and totoro ear pickers - what an odd product!
Mimikaki (ear pick) is actually very common in Japanese culture. While westerns may find it gross, it is great feeling to clean your ears.

There are mimikaki of major pop icons in Japan (Hello Kitty, Mighty Atom, Anpan man, etc.).

it is steamed rather than baked. You need ceramic cups that can be covered so that the condensing steam doesn't run into the custard and ruin it. (I had to use tin foil because I cannot find proper chawanmushi cups anywhere around here) It's easy-peasy to make once you've figured out the logistics of the steaming set up. Basically it's a custard but not a sweet one - you use dashi instead of milk and mix it into the eggs and add bits of this and that to flavour and add texture elements. It's a delicate and tasty dish - I wish it was more common here in North America.
