Hi! I'm a once-every-other-month lurker.

I've been a fan of Usagi ever since Critters #1. I was able to go back to get most of the Albedo (not #2, though... $$$$$! Should have bought it when it was only $$!) and just about every story going forward. Even have some posters and original drawings framed on the walls.

I'm 37, and currently reside in the Dallas, TX area. I grew up in Hawaii and worked in Southern California for a while. Ah the days when I could buzz down to San Diego for the ComiCon.

The number of comic book titles that I get has plummeted over the years (I started reading comic books when they were only 60 cents in 1982!), but Usagi will always be #1 on the list, even if the list goes down to just Usagi.

I'm a database programmer,and sound/multimedia system operator where I work.

hobbies include: paintball, rollerblading, bicycling, Aikido & Karate (out of practice, though)

Erik Young - Portrait of Someone Who Is Long Winded

Post by 4NT »

Ok, I saw this post and thought, why in the world would I want to post my personal information on a discussion board with a bunch of people I don’t know and may never meet?
I started sifting though the posts, glancing over some of the age groups (very surprising in some cases), interests, hobbies, etc and then it dawned on me.

I “know” almost all of you in some capacity. For those of you (if any) get the Mile High Comics Newsletter this will make sense. I have not been to a comic book convention since 1993 and I have never met face to face with another Usagi follower, but over the course of the past 5 or 6 years, I have managed to meet most of you either though Ebay transactions, letters column of UY comic book, and most of all through the past year of participating in this discussion site.

We have a very solid community, and we should all be very proud!

Having said that…

My name is Erik Young; I’m 29 (mark another one up for the two-nine-ers) and live in Dallas Texas. I have been collecting Usagi since about 1997 or so. I started collecting comic books back around 1985 beginning with the X-Men and very quickly moved on to the Ninja Turtles. I am a huge fan of the Turtles. Back in the mega anthropomorphic era everyone knew all the fuzz ball comic characters, so I have never been a stranger our favorite samurai. I’m not sure what got me into Usagi exactly, but I’m glad I am.

Aside from comics, I’ve managed to find other interests. I actively study Kung–Fu, Tai Chi and raise a few bonsai’s (see any Eastern themes?). In addition, I am one year away from finishing my bachelors’ degree, which will have taken me 12 years to complete. I work for CompUSA, a nationwide technology retailer as a Project Manager. I work out of their corporate offices here in Dallas and have been there for about 4 and a half years. I love Star Wars movies, Kurosawa films, a respectable chunk of anime, and Crouching Tiger is my favorite movie of all (formally Star Wars held the top spot). Musical interests are mostly British: Oasis, Supergrass, Blur, Coldplay as well as a ton of other stuff.

Including the infamous Albedo # 2, I’ve owned just about every comic and hardbound Stan has put out. In my mind there are few storytellers better than Mr. Sakai.

Ironically, I currently only own 3 or 4 Usagi comics and maybe 6 paperbacks. Some of you may remember seeing me post on the board. I had a few auctions on Ebay over the summer for entire sets of Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3 of the Usagi Comics, Albedo 2, 3, and 4 as well as about 10 HB novels. That was me. I sold off my Usagi collection to help fund my fiancées engagement ring. Honestly it was the best decision I have made and one of the best sacrifices I could make. The beauty of comics is the collecting, and I will enjoy collecting them again. In the meantime I pick up the TPB’s here and there and relive the adventures.

Geeze  , I should have started out with “It was the best of time, it was the worst of times…” Sorry for the loooong post, I didn’t think I had it in me.

Thanks for the opportunity, and it has been a real pleasure to get to know all of you!

-Erik

That is a fine example of someone with their priorities on straight.

Wai, wai, the first forum I belong, where I'm not the oldest!!

I'm 23, psychology student, Poland. Do I miss something, but am I the only girl here :) ? Anyway, I bought my first book of UY about a year ago, when I had to mauch money to spend and I bought it just to have something to read in the train (that was the dar time in Poland, when thete was only Oh my Goddes, Dragon Ball and X volumes published from all "manga types" comics...). And I bought it, read it in during my trip, then took off the train and as hipnotyzed went to the nearest bookstore and bought next book. And I'm still buying next volumes as soon as I see them on the shelf...

How much I am an Usagi freak? I'll tell you: I hate to learn by heart, but in one session we had 4 "deadh" exams. The only thing that could keep me near the books was a big "angry" Usagi's poster (made by me, that's why it was not so cute :(), hanging from the wall, watching me... Well, I passed those killing exames, fluently XDDDD

Hobby: I used to practice kendo, but it became to expensive for me. Now I'm subbing anime, attending my classes and read all Japanese novels avaliable in the library. I'm interested in Japan since I was 5 (yes, FIVE).

Anime: well, Eva was... boring to me. Because of all this "psychological" stuff, that was put into it, without any logical sense. It was like :"let's take a bunch of theories, mix them, add some philosophy and draw it" anime for me. It had some great moments, that cought my heart, but I like Kare Kano better (it is a lot more "real" I say). If you want to see a piece of good psychological work, you should see "Lain". The best shisophrenia study ever :D
I also love cats and all anime relatred to them (Azumanga!!).

I don't listen to the music... sorry! Sometimes OSTs, but not often...

Favourite movies: a lot. I'm a movie freak a bit :) I've seen Miazaki's "Spirited Away" and "Neko no Ongayashi" three times :), Finding Nemo, Shrek, Kurosawa's movies, Fiedler on the Roof, Leon the proffesional, Ronin, Star Wars, Star Trek... I watch almost everything (I don't like Woody Allen).
Polish comics publishers are mad. I hate them.

Hey I'm 29 too!

First encounter at the Johns Hopkins University comic book club. Been mad about it ever since. I always get hungry when reading Usagi, so whenever I get a new one, I go to a local Korean joint to read and eat!

I make trousers in Bangladesh. My website's www.misami.com

hey all luv the new forum

im 21 years old and came to pittsburgh to study animation and just got my degree back in june. no jobs for me though since i have no experience and am not too skilled yet at 3d animation programs. luv to do 2d though but it seems all those jobs are over seas in china, india, or korea. go fig.

but it was when i came to the burgh that i got interested in usagi. there is a comic book store right next to the school so i visited there one day and bought a few old tmnt comics. i remembered usagi from the cartoon and still have his action figure. but i have to admit i was more than surprised to find an ad for his comic. i had no idea he had one of his own! and i was in luck for the store had a handful of back issues. i bought #7 and was instantly hooked for life. since then i have become fascinated in everything that is japanese culture. im not too interested in their pop culture but more in there customs and manners, history ect. usagi led me to another comic/manga that i luv too. lone wolf and cub. definatley worth a try.

for now i work in a photo lab and am working on various illustrations to use in a portfolio to try and find work in other promising fields. i've gotten into tae kwon doe and became a first degree white belt last thurseday. ive wanted to learn a martial art ever since i could say "ninja" lol.

music? where to begin... i dont admit to liking everything but its a wide range. i make myself custom cd's. the line up might be something like this... misfits followed by the eagles... then no doubt...destiny's child... bluegrass...war...80s single...eminem...jazz...
well its a pretty wide range.

i luv clint eastwood movies and comedies with jim carrey. just watched "say anything" from the 80s the other day and luved it!!! tons of other stuff i could put down here but this is already too long anyways.

abayo!

When I was in Korea, I was lucky enough to make the acquaintance of a couple of animators at Sun Woo Animation-- at the time, they'd just wrapped the run of Gargoyles and were still producing episodes of the Alladin series. I was given a tour of the offices, and off in one corner there were some... North Americans! Apparently, if you're willing to entertain some culture shock (which should not be underestimated), it's not entirely fruitless to apply to the overseas studios (although I think you might also try applying to the US companies that commision the work-- Disney, WB, Saban-- and indicate that you'd be OK with going overseas to act as a sort of liason/quality control/overseer; that's what these guys were).
