Another person selling a sketch...

Post by Tounian »

I found this tonight, don't know if anyone else has seen it yet:

http://cgi.ebay.com/STAN-SAKAI-CONVENTI ... 18Q2el1247

What do we typically do about this? E-mail the person and scold them for what they are doing, or is there some sort of action we can take with ebay to have it removed? If I remember correctly, doing this is legal, just really rude...

If the date on it is correct, the sketch is 10 years old (does it say "San Diego Con 98" to everyone else?). I think we can probably afford him some leeway here...

Looks like "98" to me as well.

I think the guy deserves a break. It looks to me to be 10 years old as well. There is no reason he has to hold onto it forever. It's not like he just went to a Con and is flipping it for a greedy purpose. Maybe the guy is on hard times like a lot of people these days and just needs to pay some bills with valuable memorabilia from his past. I think our culture is so quick to overreact. *sigh* Oh, for simpler times...

The description in the title of the auction says '93'.

I don't know how Stan feels about this, but wrong is wrong, I don't care how many years after the fact it happened. If he doesn't feel wronged by it, then I won't gripe about it anymore, but as far as I'm concerned, it is still low class.

Maybe . . . but with 3480 items for sale on eBay, he's got quite a lot of memorabilia.

It is human nature to try and categorize people based on limited information. In fact, it is a great survival/coping skill***.

We are UY/Stan Sakai fans on this site. We know that few have spoiled it for the majority (i.e. Mr. Sakai no longer gives free sketches during signings - something he did generously for over 20 years). I can see why we would want to shut down anything that looked like someone was just using Mr. Sakai for a quick buck.

But your point, to not be quick to overreact, is well taken. It's something Usagi would strive to do (Oh, that is so nerdy to attribute a human value to a comic book rabbit ).

Peace, maka

***(tangent: Coping skills are often helpful in many situations. We wouldn't use them if they didn't work. But when we become habitual with only one way of coping, that is when we get into trouble).

LOL! Shows how much attention I was paying to the pic, not the description!

I'm looking at the enlarged pic trying to read the date.

He's held onto it for this long. I have no problem with him selling it.

The people I do have a problem with are those that ask for free sketches with the intention of selling them right away. Unfortunately, they have grown to become a large presence at conventions. So much so, that many artists have given up doing freebies.
