Harvey or how tall is Usagi Yojimbo?

Post by go »

Dear Readers,
My wife, Diane and I just finished watching the James Stewart classic "Harvey".
In the movie we find out that Harvey is six feet three and one half inches tall.
This leads me to wonder how tall is Usagi Yojimbo?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
Best wishes to all!

ps. I loved this movie as a child and I still think it is great.
If you have not seen it I think you may enjoy it, too.

Not to go off topic, but a remake of "Harvey" is Stephen Spielberg's next project.

I still have to see the original before I can have an opinion about the remake.

Metric conversation...

Post by go »

Dear Fanfan,
The movie Harvey was in the old English system.
75.5 inches = 191.77 centimeters
I still wonder how tall Usagi Yojimbo is?
Best wishes to all!
go
ps. as a science teacher i do use the metric system....
pps. Why remake a perfectly good movie like Harvey when scripts like Usagi Yojimbo are waiting to be made?

What is this "metric system" ?

How tall was the average Japanese male during the Edo period? Could you start with that?

I remember seeing a video of Stan at a panel somewhere in which he mentioned that Oliver Stone was actually interested in making a UY movie at some point. It's probably best that that didn't happen. Stan also said that UY has actually been auctioned for a movie but not to get too excited about that since nearly everything gets optioned at some point and only a small percentage of things that are optioned are actually made into movies.

I'd love to see a well-made UY movie, but I have a feeling that UY is probably one of those things that Hollywood should leave alone. An independent producer might be able to make a good UY movie, but it would probably require a budget that you don't usually see in the indie film world.

Since no one wants to be the first one to name off their opinion on his height then I shall. He doesn't appear to be a tall or lanky figure compared to other animals or the few human appearances. So, I'd throw out 5' 8" tall BUT if you measure to how high his ears stand up then at least 7'.

Hmmmm.

Of course, they could be living in a tiny world of Maquettes. Judging by that he must be around 12 inches tall.

Tatami as a reference for scale?

Post by go »

Dear Readers,
Is there a drawing of Usagi Yojimbo standing on a tatami mat?
If so we could calculate his height relative to the tatami mat.
Of course the tatami mat standard size is not so standard....
From wikipedia:
"The size of tatami differs between different regions in Japan.
In the Kyoto area, tatami generally measure .955 m by 1.91 m.
Tatami of this size are referred to as Kyōma tatami.
Tatami in the Nagoya region generally measure .91 m by 1.82 m, and are referred to as ainoma (lit., "in-between" size) tatami.
In the region around Tokyo, tatami generally measure .88 m by 1.76 m.....atami in the Nagoya region are based on the English measurement system.
The metric measurement .91 m by 1.82 m is the same as the English measurement 3 ft x 6 ft."
I really am enjoying how our Dojo is attempting to work out this question.
Thank you all for the fun!
Best wishes,
go
ps. Fanfan the metric measurements are included for your benefit! lol

This is the only picture I could think of that has a height comparison so I'll take a stab at it.

Assuming each circle represents 12 inches, I'd have to say Usagi is 5 ft tall (Not counting his ears). I know that's short, but according to the Deadliest Warrior tv show on Spike the average Samurai was 5'3" tall.

Well, the Playmates TMNT Usagi action figures had height measurements, but that wouldn't necessarily be canon information.
According to the old toy, he's 5'6" with his ears fully extended, and the new toy says he's 5'9" with his ears fully extended. (Sorry, I don't know right off what that would be in centimeters).
Seems like he'd be taller than that, though.

I actually always imagined the world of Usagi was a little shorter than ours. I always pictured Usagi about 5'5 to 5'10" with his ears extended.

69 inch = 175.26 centimeter
69 inches is 5' 9"

Protein

Post by go »

Mike I think you are correct. But I think Usagi was a pretty big guy for his time.
When I went to George Washington and Thomas Jefferson's homes it was clear people were (typically back then) smaller.
If you ever see a suit of European armor up close you will see how small the guy was. And those guys were the BIG guys!
Protein increase in diet has made us grow larger like Yao Ming. This size increase is only in the last 100 years if I understand things correctly.
Bud Estes was my teacher and at one time the highest ranking black belt in Jujitsu in the USA. For his demonstrations he always picked the biggest guys to throw. I told him how cool this was and he told me he picked the big guys for a reason. He said big guys have learned all their lives to be a little bit careful around others because their large size could damage people easier. He said this made them a little slower.... He also said to look out for the little wirey guys and that they were the ones that would really mess you up!
Thank you all very much for the fun!
Best wishes,

Doesn't anyone own the rpg's by Sanguine or Gold Rush Games. I'd think they list the "appearance" of Usagi somewhere in those books.

Or we could just ask in the Questions for Stan thread! thread :P
