where are usagi's dots??
hi, me again...
this time I've been thinking about why usagi's mon always loses it's dots when it is transferred to color or the plush figure?
I guess it must be about seeing the color work and not letting any form of ornament influence that effect in the eye of the beholder...but I like those dots a lot actually, what do you think about them?...

Re: where are usagi's dots??
Not sure what you mean. I don't recall ever seeing Usagi's mon without it's rabbit-track pattern of dots depicted. They are even there in the water-color painted stories and the regular color stories.coolray85 wrote:hi, me again...

no little dots 4 me?...
Dear Readers,
The mon really is ok but
I think coolray85 is asking where are all of the little dots Sensei Sakai puts on Usagi's clothing?
The plush UY on amazon.com does not seem to have the dots.
Maybe we can use a black permanent pen to correct the dots?
Is there a pattern/method to all these dots?
Best wishes to all!

hi amigos!;)
yes go-san is right...what I meant were the dots on his clothing, I thaught the word 'mon' described the whole 'clan-jacket', but I guess it stands alone for the symbol of the clan....my misstake....I thaught about that option for the usagi plush figure, too;)....
hey, can anybody tell me if in any of the zyllion usagi stories it is said what the clan of lord mifune was called??

I actually asked Mr. Sakai about the dots at Novi this year:
I've been looking to stitch together an Usagi uniform to wear to one of my Shinkendo classes and had been wrestling with the "what are those dots" question for a while. I asked Mr. Sakai if they were spots or just a texture, and the answer was, "they're kind of BOTH. He just needs something there in the illustration."
And that made a lot of sense from a design stand point and as a guy who once had a 2D design class many years ago, I should have thought of that. The dots are there because the drawing would look empty without them in black and white. They sometimes come to the color work, (like the watermark to the left) but rarely, if ever, to the painted work. Partly that's because of the limitations of the media, but also because the rendered color doesn't need that texture to be interesting.
I was looking for some high falootin answer that tries and explains the science of Usagi's world and forgot its a comic book that is slave to design problems and solutions just like any illustration approach!!
Hope it helped!

thanks everyone...your answers were great....to wildfire 405..I also had in mind that the dots were rooted in design reasons for the black and white comic book....but wondered how a painting with this design on his jacket would look...stan wouldn't have to use black ink dots but he could play and experiment a little with colors and ideas to make it visual interesting...maybe reflect the sunlight in some areas of the jacket by using lighter color for the dots in these parts....you know something like that...but I also enjoy the way we have seen it so far....
