Moving to the Wii Virtual Console. Talk me out of it?

Post by shaxper »

So I think I've finally decided to take the plunge, sell my old N64, SNES, and Nintendo to the used game store, and re-buy my favorite classic games on the Wii virtual console. It's a bit of a waste of money selling the games for nothing and then rebuying them at $5 to $8 a piece, but it will take up a LOT less room. I've got a 16 gig Super High Capacity SD card, so I should be able to store all of this on my Wii easily.

So here are my questions:

1. Any good reason why I shouldn't do this (cost aside)?

2. Does anyone have any knowledge as to whether or not Goonies II for NES will ever be released for virtual console? It's a favorite classic game of mine, and I hate the idea of not being able to play it anymore.

3. How well does the three button controller layout for Sega Genesis translate to the Wii Classic Controller? I'm considering keeping my Genesis and games for that reason.

If I go through with this today (and I do plan to do it today or tomorrow), it will leave me with one seriously loaded Wii, a PS2, a Genesis, and an Atari 2600. Four systems will be a lot more manageable than seven.

I am 100% sure I'm getting rid of my N64 at this point (takes up tons of space and I only use it for two games), 50% sure about the NES and SNES (big libraries of games to replace on virtual console), and pretty unsure about the Genesis (I only play about 5 games, but the button layout concerns me).

Any advice would be appreciated!

I don't know, but if you're ok with downloading game ROMs (I'd say it's justified if it's some 80s NES game that isn't being made/sold anymore) and you don't mind playing NES games on your computer, there are plenty of ROM/Emulation sites out there that have it.

I'm a fan of this game too. I think it was actually one of the first NES games I ever played (about 22 years ago!). I always got a big laugh from hitting the people in the maze part of the game with a hammer; I guess this game brought out a little bit of my inner sadist.

I want to get this on a tshirt:

While we're on the subject, I like this cover of the main theme music (which was, of course, already a cover of Cyndi Lauper's Goonies song) by The Minibosses:

"Ouch. What do you do?" has always been a classic line for me :D

I have nothing at all against the concept of downloading Roms and Emulators of classic systems, but I do not like playing games at a computer. I found a flash version of Goonies II to play on my Wii internet browser, but it's sluggish, and the music cuts in and out a lot.

By the way, thanks for sharing that link. Awesome!!

Personally I think the old school gaming systems are worth having because you may someday have a change of heart and want to re-buy all you sold. It's better to pack it away somewhere safely stored away for the future. Your own comment about it being a bit of waste tells me that my idea resounds already within you. Just keep them, you won't get jack for them anyways. Maybe the NES, but, just hold em'. On a different note, the Nintendo Gamecube has a lot of compatibility to the Wii. Gamecube games can be played in the Wii, etc.
So, that didn't address all your questions, but, there ya go!

Not sure how adept you might be modding consoles you are, but you can softmod your Wii to play all your movies/music/photos. Softmod means you install program(s) rather than open up the console and make physical modifications.

If you install WiiMC and Homebrew using a standard SD card then you can also download all the emulated NES/Geneseis/SNES games in WAD form.

Same as emulating without the $8-15 per game purchase. The cost is in the SD card and purchasing the game controllers. Though, admittedly its not the same as holding classic controllers in your hand, it does work great.

Just rocked a little River City Ransom the other night. What a great game!

I stopped being a "saver" a long time ago because I have way too many things. If I never parted with things that I might miss and want again sometime in the future, I'd need an extra house. I think I've decided to keep the NES/SNES/Genesis anyway because I do have space for them right now, I don't want to rebuy the libraries, and I'm concerned about games that either aren't ported or aren't ported well. N64 and Gamecube are going, though.
On a different note, the Nintendo Gamecube has a lot of compatibility to the Wii. Gamecube games can be played in the Wii, etc.

Yeah, but that requires keeping Gamecube controllers lying around and removing the panels from the top of the Wii so that it looks pretty ugly. There isn't a single Gamecube game I love that hasn't been ported well to the Wii (really, there's only Metroid Prime and Pikmin), so it doesn't seem worth it.

Thanks for your advice!
