Brian draws a cool Usagi. I remember him wondering why he wasn't asked to participate in The Sakai Project and then he said he may have been busy at the time. Or something like that.
Cullen Bunn (writer of The Sixth Gun) and I exchanged introductions, but it was not planned. I had told he and Brian years ago how much I enjoyed the series and, after Cullen and I both did seminars at Omaha Bound, it seemed natural that we write ones for each others' upcoming books.
Only a handful of people, such as Sergio, were asked to participate in The Sakai Project. The vast majority did it out of the true goodness of their hearts, which makes it all the more amazing that we got such terrific pieces. We actually received more than 425 pieces of art but could only fit about half of them in the book.
Stan Sakai wrote:It may be six variants, including my two. They will all be published in the HC, though, so you don't need to buy all the variants to get the images.

Looking at past announcements, I'd expect Dark Horse to announce their July release details around the middle of this month (it seems past announcement dates have ranged from the 15th-22nd), so I'd say we have at least a week's wait until we can put our pre-orders in.

thank you for the info!I'll be sure to check that time again then..I thought this was an idw gig...
This is a joint publishing project from DH and IDW, however the comic and HC will come out of IDW. The story will be reprinted in 2018's UY trade/HC collection.

Ah crap, you're right. And I even knew that it was being published by IDW. Total brain fart on my part.
Looks like IDW has posted their solicitations on the 22nd the past couple months, so I'd anticipate we have about 2 weeks until we see the July releases listed.
Okay. Here is the final count for the TMNT/Usagi covers (I hope).
1-mine for the regular edition
2-mine for the HC edition
3-David Petersen
4-Sergio Aragones
5-Kevin Eastman
6-Kevin Eastman fan club edition (wraparound cover)
7-Kevin Eastman San Diego Con Exclusive
8-Books-a-Million variant (by me)
9-Other Realms variant (by me)
Remember--all these will be reprinted in the HC edition (I think. We're still trying to figure out what extras will be included).
I think IDW may be doing a giveaway poster (not sure yet)
Daniel got permission from Nickelodeon to do a limited edition print of a cover
Playmate Toys will have a Comic Con Exclusive action figure (I think with 2 interchangeable heads)
We are hoping to have a Sakai Exclusive figure that will be available through the website, probably in the fall
