Rabbits on the moon
I havent had a chance to find out more about this yet but it seems that Japanese folktales have rabbits living on the moon. As autumn is a nice season for moon watching (sukimi) there are many sukimi specials including foods with sunny side up eggs as they resemble the moon. Ads for this type of thing have rabbits flying to/around the moon. I guess this isnt any more wierd than the moon being made of cheese but... maybe space usagi is one of these.

Those rabbits make mochi on the moon
So, I asked about it, and it seems that you can see the image of a rabbit making mochi on the moon. I had thought maybe the craters were rabbit holes but actually one of the bottom most craters is a mochi barrel and the rabbit is a bit to the left with a hammer pounding the mochi. Not weirder than bakegasa?

There is indeed a white rabbit (or rather hare) in the moon. According to Buddhist scripture, the Buddha, in the incarnation of a hare, sacrificed himself to provide food. As a reward, the hare was immortalized on the moon.
The Japanese changed it slightly so that the hare is pounding mochi for the New Year's rice cakes.
In "Lone Rabbit & Child", one of the earliest Usagi stories, there is a panel of Usagi looking at the rabbit in the moon (but he's not pounding mochi).

I will defonetly have to talk to my firend Fumikos' mom about the Bunny on the moon, I dident know it intertwined with the Buddhist faith (and thats what they are)- thats so interesting...^^

Kappa Avatar
I really liked Stan's Kappa, (thanks for the reply about moon rabbits Mr. Sakai!), So I redrew and painted a picture of it. It looks pretty good. When I can get a better picture of it I'd like to submit it as fan art and I'll update the avatar picture too.
Thanks to Usagi Yojimbo I know the names of lots of animals and obake so it really helps my Japanese ability living here. -Matt Rosandich

Name change? - Kappa
...So if anyone can tell me how to submit fan art I'd really appreciate it. Also, I wanted to be "Kappa" when I joined the site but I'm not sure what happened. Is it possible to change my name? (I'd like my rank to be kappa, or obake or something too, but perhaps not possible?) -Matt Rosandich

Well you can submit fanart in the "Usagi Yojimbo Dojo Help"- I tihnk the only thing you have to really have is a separate link to show your work.....as for just submitting ot the page, you might want to see if the "Fanart & Fiction" section of the page has anything.....

Speaking of which, Osamu Tezuka has an awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome series called "Buddha" out by Vertical comics.Stan Sakai wrote: There is indeed a white rabbit (or rather hare) in the moon. According to Buddhist scripture, the Buddha, in the incarnation of a hare, sacrificed himself to provide food. As a reward, the hare was immortalized on the moon.
Book One of the series briefly covers the rabbit story Sakai-San mentions.
I highly recommend the series.
