Questions about original art

Post by Maka »

Hello Everyone,

I have a few questions to ask the Usagi Community. I think this is the correct place (vs. general discussion board) to post these questions.

There are three things I want in my collection from the Usagi world (alright, I want it all <especially another baseball cap>, yet I don't have an endless supply of money):

1) Original art
2) A commissioned art piece
3) A set of Usagi comic books (I currently own most of the trades)

Questions:

1) Are the prices we see on DHC website for original covers/art what I can expect to pay if I visit Mr. Sakai at this booth at some convention?

2) Does Mr. Sakai still do comission art? What is the proper way to ask for a commission piece? And what are the range of prices?

What I would like is to have a self-portrait of Mr. Sakai for my Self-portrait "artist of all types " sketchbook (which I proudly have self-portraits from Art Adams, Paul Smith, Alex Ross, Brent Anderson, Steven Bissette, Mark Martin, Douglas Adams, Garrison Keiller, John Totteben, Timothy Hearsum, and a bunch of tallented friends and love ones. There is also some non-self-portrait art from various comic artist, including Mr. Sakai. Mr. Sakai did an wonderful Usagi "in the field of tall grass" sketch on 11.6.99 in my home town of Monterey Park. But I would love a self portrait).

I would love to learn through your experiences/stories of buying original art or commissioned works (I seem to remember seeing some of the amazing art on this site, including that two page kite festival of every character.) . I don't know if it's proper to post prices on this board, so if you feel more comfortable feel free to reply to me by message or by my personal email (zarolove@yahoo.com). I look forward to hearing your stories.

Peace,

maka

Ha! I was looking at some of my old posts on the dojo and found out that my wishes came true:

I have an Usagi baseball hat
I have Stan Sakai original art
I have two Stan Sakai self-portrait sketches
I have a set of Usagi Comics.

Well, I don’t have the latest issue of Usagi. I haven’t made it to the lcbs yet. But once that is done, my life will be complete.

Peace, maka

When I first started reading this thread, I thought, "what the heck is Maka talking about?," then, I saw the date on it!

No one ever replied to Maka! Except for Maka, 13 years later! :P

LOL...... Dreams do come true! Now Maka is one of the Dojo's foremost Usagi-ologists!

Haha, that was exactly my reaction as well. I was thinking that he's bought plenty of stuff and should know the answers to the questions. I figured Maka must have been very tired when he wrote the first post. I didn't notice the original post date until Mayhem pointed out the "necro" thread! :D

That's what I was thinking, then re-read it a couple of times. Read the replies, scratched my head, and finally checked the date.

I started reading and, when I saw the questions, checked the date. I mean, Maka asking about commissions?

Talk about a Lazarus thread :P
Now would I cheat a friend?
