I never knew about Uncle Jam 77 (or had even heard of Uncle Jam). It appears to be a periodical about comics? So I should add it to the Magazines/Periodicals/Newspapers section?

I also have that Zell issue. So far I think that makes 3 publications where this story and ad appear (maybe Steve knows of some others?).david20009 wrote:I completely forgot about Zell Sworddancer 1(July 1986). I should have had that on my list (and I will add it later)

In 1973, Phil Yeh and partner Mark Eliot started their own alternative newspaper called Uncle Jam, which featured a first issue cover by Roberta Gregory, a fellow student at Cal State University Long Beach. The paper featured interviews, full color covers, and articles on many noted comic book and science fiction masters including; Harvey Kurtzman, Jean “Moebius” Giraud, Alfredo Alcala, Wendy Pini, Philip K. Dick, Linda Barry, Sergio Aragones, Kelly Freas, and Rick Griffin. The newspaper became Cobblestone for a few years in the mid 70's and the reverted back to Uncle Jam. Production stopped in 1991 because of the Cartoonists Across America & the World tour. It was brought back as a magazine in 2009.
I would consider it a story.TheBroox wrote:That same ad is also in the Art of Usagi Yojimbo.
Do you all consider it a story or an ad? I have previously not included it in my story spreadsheet but maybe I should. Thoughts?
In the Art of Usagi Yojimbo it is listed as a promotional ad.TheBroox wrote:That same ad is also in the Art of Usagi Yojimbo.

Just a minor note, but her name is Peach (Momoko), not "Peaches".david20009 wrote: I will add the Peaches Wanderers Road alternative plus the FCBD alternative covers to the chart.
Maybe Stan will see this discussion and tell us what his opinion is.david20009 wrote:I would consider it a story.TheBroox wrote:That same ad is also in the Art of Usagi Yojimbo.

I would consider only the bottom right panel to be an ad as that panel appeared other places alone ( ie Albedo 2 and 3) to sell the T-Shirt.
I would consider that an ad. Especially since I did some work for Phil at the time and was paid with an "ad space". Uncle Jam was a free newspaper around the Southern California area, especially Long Beach where Phil's Cobblestones Gallery was located. He also founded Cartoonists Across America, an organization promoting literacy, and was the publisher of Patrick Rabbit and Penguin and Pencilguin along with Frank the Unicorn.maichan wrote:Maybe Stan will see this discussion and tell us what his opinion is.david20009 wrote:I would consider it a story.TheBroox wrote:That same ad is also in the Art of Usagi Yojimbo.

I've posted an inquiry on Facebook and tagged Sakai sensei in hopes of getting his attention.
It was also in one of the UY Sketchbooks (I think).maichan wrote:david20009 wrote: I also have that Zell issue. So far I think that makes 3 publications where this story and ad appear (maybe Steve knows of some others?).
- Uncle Jam #77 February 1985
- Command Review July 1986
- Zell July 1986
Thanks for weighting in Stan. I will leave it out of the spreadsheet then.Stan Sakai wrote: I would consider that an ad. One suggestion I might make:david20009 wrote:Regarding the one-pager in Zell Sworddancer #1, Command Control #1 and Uncle Jam 77 I am including it in the list as "What I have tried to do here is list all the comics, magazines, hardcovers and trade paperbacks that Usagi Yojimbo has appeared in, including alternative covers, or that Stan has contributed a story to. This does not include comics that just have a Usagi or Stan Sakai pin up.
I think the one-pager fits that category and should be listed. To me it is a gag page like Ninja Hunt was and should be noted for completists. Where just the panel advertising the T-Shirt appears (ie.Cutey Bunny #4) I have left it off the list as that seems like more of a pin-up to me.
Thank you Stan. Your "first hand insiders experience" is appreciated!Stan Sakai wrote:I would consider that an ad. Everything in the list is meant to be there, even if it is oddball, everything in the list should have a Usagi story as I didn’t bother with pin-ups by Stan or of Usagi both because there are too many and the Usagi Bibliography does a good job listing them.maichan wrote:

For the Magazines/Periodicals/Newspapers would be to include a description of the contents, or a story title, so that the completionists will know what those publications contain (like what you did with the category Misc (3 comics, 2 Magazines).
[Edit]Just a random thought... I don't know if it is meant to be part of your list, or not, but as I was looking through the Comics section, I noticed there are those oddball titles that contain something Usagi related (like Command Review, Doomsday Squad, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Zell Sworddancer, etc., etc.). Maybe include exactly what they contain? I know it would have been helpful for me if I would have had one list that had what those publications contained when I was hunting for titles, but at that time I had to find the info from various sources.

Yeah, that's understandable. I really only meant for the oddball titles and not the Usagi books in general. For example, Command Review, Zell Sworddancer and Uncle Jam, all have that same story/ad, so I meant just a brief mention like that for a few titles. Not sure if I will list what is in every issue as I would have to dig through a bunch of comic boxes to pull things out - maybe if I have time. I did note for the Star Wars titles that included previews of Usagi what was there. The Doomsday Squad issue had the first color Usagi.
