I wanted to go but had a funeral to attend. In the evening I went to visit Don Nishimura at Street Image to discuss the next UYD t-shirt, which I am keeping top-secret for now. I also got to see Gary from Gary's Corner Bookstore, who I hadn't seen in years. He tells me Stan still comes by once a week to pick up the new books.

Did the Long Beach street race interfere with the turnout, do you think?

I have high hopes of at least the L.A. Times book festival...

Now that I've stated that, something will probably jinx it. :( :?

Pulp Fiction

Post by Dranatha »

Pulp Fiction was a perfect event for Usagi fans. Small venue with lots of time for personal contact with Stan.

Unfortunately I brought my 3 year old son with me. We arrived at about 9:00am, an hour before Stan was scheduled to arrive, to watch the TMNT cartoons featuring our favorite rabbit. The morning started well, my son was excited and enthralled by the cartoons, but by the time Stan got there he was probably ready for a nap. My son Phil attempted to upstage Stan during the first part of the presentation. After a few minutes I realized I would not be able to reign him in, I left the presentation and took my son to breakfast. I actually left a nice portion of my precious collection unguarded under my chair. After loading Philip up with pancakes and french fries, we returned to hear the end of the presentation. Just when I thought my son was engaged and enjoying the "Stan experience", he moved to the center of the gathering, tilted his head back and screamed one long howl until his breath ran out. We stepped outside until the end.

I still managed to get my Art of Usagi hard cover signed and sketched and ironically Stan signed his Dark Horse Extra series "A lesson in Courtesy" and dedicated it to Philip. Your the best Stan! Many thanks.

I welcome kids at my presentations. Hannah and Matthew grew up watching me do these things. They're pretty bored with it now.

I remember one event when Matthew was about three. I was drawing on an easel as I normally do, when Matthew picked up a marker and started drawing at the next easel. It was holding one of my paintings for display. The audience gasped, but I just had to laugh. He just wanted to do what Dad was doing. How could I get upset with that?

Could you possibly provide any links to sites that may be up with more info about this event (like event times and so forth)?

Are you going to be there the whole time both days or only for a limited amount of hours?

The reason I ask is that for me, it is a 6 hour drive from where I live in North Carolina to Atlanta and should I able to make the trip, I would like to make sure I catch you. :)

The website for Anime Weekend Atlanta is:

http://www.awa-con.com

I don't see me listed as a guest, but I have been invited and accepted. I should be there the entire time.

I won't have a table there, but I should be easy to find and I'll probably have a program or two. The Japan Festival is also taking place at the same time, and I want to see that as well.

I apologize for bumping an old thread, but I would like to ask a few questions in regards to your signing at Anime North.

What is the cut-off number of items you will sign? Not that I have too many Usagi books in the first place... (Much to my chagrin, but, I'm not made of money...) But I was thinking of bringing about three trade paper back collections to get signed.

Do you do sketches? If I get to meet you (Which looks doubtful, considering how incompetent AN is in regards to managing their guests' autograph sessions... Which is what prevented me from meeting you and Frank Miller when you guys appeared together the year before last, but that's a story for another time.) I would like to ask you for a sketch. Nothing fancy, a quick headshot of Usagi would be great.

If I bring a camera with me, would you allow me to get a picture?

I doubt I'll be very busy at Anime North, so I'll sign whatever you bring. I usually do this even at San Diego. However, if there are others waiting, I'll just sign a few items and then have you go back to the end of the line.

I will do drawings. I do not take requests for the free sketches, though, and I do insist on it being personalized to someone. I usually do a drawing when I sign the books as well.

Photos are fine.

I did ask for a schedule this time:

Friday- 3-5pm Meet and Greet with fans (fundraising food function)
Panel/Q/A: either 7:30- 8:30 or 8:30-9:30pm

Saturday: Awards brunch- 10-12 noon
Charity Auction at 1pmish (if you want to watch)
Autographs, Q/A in the afternoon (1-2 hours)

Sunday: afternoon- Q/A autographs
Closing ceremonies ~6pm

Also, look for me as I'm walking around. I'm usually happy to accommodate you, as long as I'm not in a hurry to get somewhere.

Yes, Toronto. I think it was posted on another topic somewhere.

The entire family will be at Anime North, May 27-27. I've even been asked to provide the cover for the con book. For information, go to:

www.animenorth.org

I will also be doing a presentation at the Monterey Park Library in California on May 7. It will be part of their Asian Pacific Heritage Festival.
Is there anyone going to Anime North this weekend who might be able to help out a very dedicated, but unfortunately work-bound, Dojo member aquire a copy of the convention book featuring Stan's great artwork?
Small bribes, appreciation, and shipping reinbursement are available...
Thanks,
Abayo.
