Stories not found in the TPBs

Post by ziritrion »

Looking through the story synopsis I've found some which I think are not printed in the TPBs (the ones appearing in the color specials, like Tomoe's Story). How many of these stories are there? How are they called? How can I get them? Thanks!

The new stories that were in the first three Color Specials (from Fantagraphics) and the story from the Trilogy Tour Book have not been reprinted.

The Color Specials had their own continuity and Usagi has not reached that point in his life yet. They will probably be reprinted (though sans color) in UY Book 20 or so. There are no plans to reprint The Guardian story in the Trilogy book. That was a watercolored story and I do not know where the film negatives are. It may be cost-prohibitive to reseparate the colors.

Thank you very much for the answer Mr. Sakai. Do you (or anyone else) know if I still can buy those color specials or the Usagi Yojimbo volume 1 comics from Fantagraphics' website? I did not see them in their website, although maybe I did not looked thoroughly enough (or perhaps I should write an e-mail to them?). Also, I'd like to get the Mirage comics, but when I went to the webpage indicated somewhere in the UY Dojo, the only way to order them seemed to be by standard mail only. Is there any way I can order them on-line (maybe another on-line shop or something the like)? Thanks!

Fantagraphics still reprints the TPBs even if they list them in their catalog. I've got a UY Book Two - Samurai which was printed in July 1999.

To get them, you have to ask them for it, they have it. You can also order them through a comic book shop but you must insist that Fantagraphics still has them on stock because they are not listed in the catalog (why? ... beats me).

As for the color specialy, I got them by eBay. They pop up there every now and then and they are quite cheap (as opposed to the famous Albedo issue which goes for $$$).

All Mirage issued were reprinted in black and white in the first two books by DHC (Shades of Death and Daisho). I tried to buy the color comics on eBay but I was too slow :-(

Hi Ziritrion,

I just realized you're in Barcelona. Planeta DeAostini publishes both the Fantagraphics and Dark Horse volumes in Spanish. I recently received my copies of El Camino del Vagabundo (The Wanderer's Road).

I hope one day to make it back to Spain. My good friend Sergio Aragones goes there every two years to the Barcelona Comics Festival held in a train station. I'd like to see that, as well as go back to Asturia and Madrid.

I learnt about Usagi about 4 months ago when I saw the Planeta deAgostini TPBs in Spanish back in the Salón del Manga (which, by the way, is the biggest manga con in the world -outside Japan, although they also have some American and European comics, but these are usually shown in the Salón del Cómic, also in Barcelona :) ). I really liked them, but I prefer to have them in English, since I think that translation is always worse that the original (although I must say that they did a really good job). There's also another problem: Planeta started publishing books from 8 to 12 (Dark Horse), since at the time they started they could not publish the Fantagraphics books (I have no clue why), but then, after they published Segadora (Grasscutter), they managed to start publishing them, and so far they have released books 1 through 3 (although the front cover for Samurai features the Dragonrider drawing I've seen in those wallpapers in the Dojo, instead of the original cover!); which means that they have released 8 books so far, and since I enjoyed UY so much I couldn't wait to get the other 8 books, so I went to a library in Barcelona specialized in Sci-Fi and comics which imports them to all Spain, and ordered the books I could not get there at Amazon 8) . This library also imports the DH issues, so I started to buy them as well (I did not have enough with "The Shrouded Moon" either :P ). I also bought the Green Persimon color special and I liked it in color, so that's why I wanna get the Mirage issues. And since I'm in such a collecting craze, I thought about the Fantagraphics issues as well :D .
I guess I'll start looking at eBay, although I have to save some money first. Hopefully the library will bring #64 next week. Can't wait :D

P.S.: about the Comic Festival you said: I guess you're talking about the Salón del Cómic I mentioned at the beginning (if it's held in a train station, it can't be anyone else -the train station is called Estació de França, and usually has all kinds of art expositions). Well, it's grown so big that it won't fit in the train station anymore, so they've translated it to La Farga, in L'Hospitalet (which is a huge building in a town next to Barcelona, usually reserved for concerts or other important events; get the size of the thing?). If you ever come to the Festival I'll make sure to pass by and say hello (I hope that will be soon :) ).
