UY Book 20

Post by Stan Sakai »

Usagi Yojimbo Book 20: Glimpses of Death will be solicited for an early July 2006 release. Barring any delays, it should be out just in time for the San Diego Comic-Con.

Does anyone have the cover images of the new 2 and 6 reprints?

Stan's been going to the SDCC's non-stop for decades. I think he has been to all of them except one. It's the one convention in the world that is 99.99% guaranteed to have Stan at.

I've actually missed quite a few. 2005 was only my 27th consecutive San Diego Con. I first started going when it was at the old El Cortez Hotel, and attendance was under 1,000. That was a time when you could see Jack Kirby sitting at a table, and go over and talk for awhile. I remember Sergio serenading people at poolside at 2 in the morning. Or going to the masquerade with B Kliban. Or having breakfast with D(ick) Moores (old timers may know who he was).

This year, the attendance with dealers was 107,000.

San Diego is really the only con I go as a dealer. I go to other cons as a guest, and they may give me a table, but I'll only bring a few books and some art. I bring almost everything to San Diego.

So you haven't missed a SDCC since 1978? Wow...I'm assuming back then you went as a fan and not a pro? Or maybe you were like many others today trying to break into the business...

I was working as a freelance artist and was a member of CAPS (Comic Arts Professional Society), so I always went as a pro. Although at first, it was as a struggling professional. Also, the con has always had a pretty liberal definition of a "professional". They tend to encourage and support upcoming writers and artists.

Sharon and I were married in July of 1977, and moved to California in August. So 1978 was our first SD Con. After the El Cortez was bought by some religious group, the Con moved to the (old) Convention Center. The Hotel San Diego was the con hotel, right down the street from the city jail, and across the street from the bail bondsmen and tattoo palors. The city has really cleaned up the downtown area, and the new Convention Center and hotels are a big step above the old days.

I've never been to SDCC, the closest I've ever been to is Gencon Indy. What do you guys do there, is it mostly a trade show between proffessionals or is it for the fans too?

Considering there were 97,000 non-professionals and non-dealers there in 2005, there must have been something for fans to do. Serious though, there are artists, writers and publishers panels, autograph sessions, previews of upcoming projects (including movies), an art show, anime and manga panels, gaming of all sorts, spotlight panels, movie rooms running 24 hours, a 14 acre (I think) dealers' room, the Eisner, Inkpot, and Lulu Awards, a masquerade, parties, the American Association of Comic Books dinner, lots of networking, portfolio reviews, and much, much more.

There are a lot of special guests, but many have just dropped in unannounced or to do a panel--Frank Frazetta, Frank Capra, James Cameron, Haley Berry, Lucy Liu, Keanu Reeves, to name just a few. Mark Hamil used to be there as a dealer selling comic books (this is even after Star Wars), and Leonardo DiCapprio is usually there (having grown up in SD, and his father was a comics distributor). Miguel Ferrar, Billy Mumy, Max Collins, and Steve Leialoha used to comprise Seduction of the Innocent, a band that regularly played only at the post Eisner Award dance.

Also, the city itself is a great tourist town. They have a wonderful zoo, Sea World, Wild Animal Park (though this is a drive away), Old Town, Mexico is just to the south and accessible by auto or rail, a children's museum is near the con as well as Sea Port Village.

Wow. Sounds like a wondeful place to visit. I love America!
Ugh, the UK is so far away.
And airfare has gotten so expensive latley... I'd be there just like that every other few weeks if it wasn't for the cost, lol.
I do hope to get to a ComicCon one day though - better yet, lets start them over here!
