Usagi's sword legendary?
Hio Hio!
Its Hugegoat again,
Havent you guys ever wondered why usagi's sword doesnt get cracks over time? Steel swords are tough and can probably last through a life time with no fighting, but usagi probably uses it around 4 times a week. I just started thinking of this when reading a japenese novel.

Stan places tremendous emphasis on the idea of the daisho being a samurai's soul. Jei's black sword blades are a testament to how seriously Stan seems to take this idea within the comic. I think having to replace the swords would shatter that idea. If Usagi is pure of heart (and soul), the swords should last forever.
But if Samurai truly believed that the Daisho were the Samurai's soul, then I'm assuming the swords didn't crack all that often, or Samurai would be losing souls left and right.

Not to forget, Stan has mentioned that Usagi's swords are passed down to his descendents, including Terry Miyamoto (contemporary time setting) as well as "Space" Usagi (in the future).
It would be interesting to have Usagi meet a sword polisher and learn what he might have to say about Usagi's "soul". (If you have seen the Miyamoto Musashi - Samurai Film Trilogy, I am referring to the Sword Polisher whom Musashi met)
Abayo....

In Zatoichi: The Cane Sword - Zatoichi meets a the student of the master swordsmith (is that what you call them? A blacksmith) that made his sword. The student tells Zatoichi that their is a fine break in the sword and it may last only one more killing before it breaks.Hugegoat wrote: Havent you guys ever wondered why usagi's sword doesnt get cracks over time?
If you know Zatoichi films, he usually kills scores of people, so it's quite dramatic how it ends up being resolved.
I think it would be a great story to retell in UY mythology, but I have to agree with Steve and say Space Usagi supposedly has the Usagi's old sword. Too bad.
Peace,

In addition, "Daisho" clearly shows that Usagi's sword was forged 300 years before the story takes place. Since it was handed to another aspiring samurai at the time, it seems reasonable to assume that it was used during that 300 year span.
On the flip side, It's also entirely possible that Usagi's sword hadn't been used in a very long time before Space Usagi and Ms. Miyamato recieved it. It may have even been restored.

Just wanted to bump this old comment that Stan made some twelve or so years ago.....Stan Sakai wrote:Usagi will go to a sword polisher at the beginning of the Hideyoshi's Gold story line. It won't be for quite awhile though, as we're just finishing up a story involving a hidden gold mine.
(I was reading old posts mentioning Terry Miyamoto....)

What timing that Steve bumped up this thread. I was thinking stories beyond The Hidden. The next "mini-series" I have planned is Bunraku & Other Stories, then Hideyoshi's Gold.
