Post by Steve Hubbell »

Albedo #2 First Appearance Usagi Yojimbo CGC 8.5 1984
Buy it Now price: US $850.00
End time: Apr-18-06 14:05:15 PDT
Seller: danamichelle ( 130)
ALBEDO # 2 (Vol. 1) 1984

Albedo # 2

The rare first appearance of Usagi Yojimbo!

CGC Cert # 0135583002

Graded 8.5 (VF+) by the Comics Guaranty Corporation

CGC has also certified this book to be restoration-free!

White Pages

Only 2,000 printed! The black cover plus a low print run make this book tough to find.

If you are unsatisfied with the book in any way, I will accept a return. I've included a picture of the book, it has been graded by CGC, and I've included the serial # for the book (so you can get the grader notes if you so wish). I certainly feel you'll be happy with the book!
Wow...those prices are just amazing.

Hmmm...I wonder what I have in my collection that would go for that much?

Naaa....I can't bring myself to part with any of them.

Here's the TMNT #1 auction...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 6620015742

Anyone care to explain to me (as I'm fairly ignorant terminology wise to comic grading) what the first couple of paragraphs in the auction text mean?

It makes me wonder if I should get mine professionally graded. Of course I'm also hoping it don't turn out to be a fake either :P

Would there be anyone at San Diego Comicon who would be able to grade stuff? Just a thought for maybe to bring it along with me...

the ebay seller wrote:This is signed by both creators and is not a Green Qualified Label which is usually tagged to these type of signatures. It also is not a Signature Series, Yellow label. It is a Blue Universal Label, the BEST.

A recent TMNT #1 in a 7.0 CGC went for over $850 and a 9.4 went for over $5,000. Both on EBAY, both in the last month.

As of today, April 5, 2006, only 110 CGC TMNT #1 EXIST!!!!! That is only 3.66% of the originals. These are hard to come accross. I can only find them on EBAY, never at a convention. I really wouldn't buy any non-CGC graded TMNT #1 claiming to be a first printing. There are to many counterfeits out there.

This is a 1st printinting of TMNT #1 created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The 1st print had only 3000 copies, 2nd printing had 15,000 and the 3rd printing had 35,000 copies. ALL SOLD OUT !!!!

Comics Guaranty, LLC. wrote:There is an easy to understand label placed on the interior of the holder on certified comic books. The label displays the title, issue #, publisher and grade of a comic book. It can also display the importance (for Key Issues) or the artist (if by an important artist). There are four different colored labels that represent:

Universal (blue) — This label is applied to comic books that are simply the grade as marked with no qualifiers or special considerations.

Signature Series (yellow) — This label is applied to comic books that have been signed by someone of significance to the comic, under the direct observation of a CGC employee, and are thus certified as an authentic signature by CGC.

Qualified (green) — A Qualified label is used by CGC for certified books that have a significant defect that needs specific description. For example, it is would be a disservice to the seller and buyer to call a VF/NM book with a 4-inch back cover tear a VG, so CGC will give this book a Qualified grade of "VF/NM 9.0, back cover 4-inch tear."

Restored (purple) — This label is applied to any comic book that has evidence of repair so it will appear as it did when it was in its original condition. Restoration can come in a variety of degrees, slight professional restoration (SP) to extensive amateur restoration (EA).

Modern (red) — An outdated label used originally to distinguish modern comics. (these books can be sent in for our New Holder service and receive a blue, universal label at the same grade)

Yeah it was the coloured label I wasn't familiar with... cheers for that.
only 110 CGC TMNT #1 EXIST
I presume that means only 110 of the first print #1 have been submitted to the CGC then?

Next step, how to actually get them to look at mine seeing as I'm most likely not in the same country :P

I did check out the website and see all that... part of the :P was a rhetorical :P ness of it heh.

I did spot in their FAQ they are likely to attend cons, so perhaps I can bring it and hand it over at San Diego. Then it would only need to be sent back (no point risking two trips in the mailing system when one can be had). Only problem I see... insurance for it to be sent back, cost, and bloody Customs...

I, personally, don't own a single CGC graded comic or any comics graded by any of the other grading services. I collect my comic for personal enjoyment and not for financial value.

Even my copy of Albedo #2 has been read and pawed through (carefully) a number of times, so it is probably in the F-VF catagory.

It is always interesting, though, to see what kinds of prices a comic goes for when you actually own a copy of it.

I can not understand how CGC or anyone else can claim a comic is NM-M or any other high grade condition if the comic is ripped.

Abayo....

Likewise Steve if truth be told, I get the comics to enjoy reading them, though admitedly if I want to look at an issue #1 of TMNT, I'm gonna pull out the fifth printing version I have and not the first ;)

Personally it's a matter of curiosity. And partly because at some point I never know I might need to sell it to raise some money (though I hope it never comes to that) and it might give me a rough idea how much it could be worth. If a 9.4 TMNT #1 first print just sold on eBay for just under $5,000 ( ) then it's a serious business me thinks...

The trouble is you may pay $5000 for it today, but what about in ten years? What happens if CGC goes out of business? Does the value still hold? There are too many variables to consider this a worth while investment or to consider that CGC is a viable means of determining value.

Besides even if I drop five grand for a book I still wanna read the thing.

Where is Sensei Sakai's cut?

Post by go »

Hello Readers,
Where is Sensei Sakai and Steve Gallacci's cut on the deal?
Seems to me they should get a % of this big a deal.
By the way, does Sensei Sakai really have boxes of Albedo #2 (NM condition) in his garage? Maybe time to bring them out....
Thank you all for the fun!
Best wishes,
go
