Usagi's future

Post by shaxper »

While I'm a huge fan of the idea of a creator controlled comic, it does make me nervous that only Mr. Sakai can do Usagi and yet Mr. Sakai is mortal. If he were to ever tire of doing Usagi Yojimbo (he's been researching, plotting, writing and drawing the comic monthly for nearly twenty years!) and chose to retire, what would happen to Usagi? Would Mr. Sakai appoint someone to take over for him, or would that simply be the end? Has Mr. Sakai ever addressed this point before?

Hello Sharper,

Way back when Mr. Sakai answer a similar question:
1) You’ve been the sole creator of UY for 21 years. Beyond TMNT, will you ever allow anyone once to write, draw or created UY? For example, if you decide to retire someday, will you license out UY so that stories can continue?

SS--I won't license out the character to anyone else, but I would like to see an occassional story or mini-series by another cartoonist. Check out The Art of UY if you would like to see interpretations of Usagi by different artists.

2) How about mini-series with other characters? For example, will you allow other artist to do a mini-series on Tomoe?

SS--A mini-series about one of my secondary characters would be fine, but, economically if another artist were to do a mini-series, it would make more sense for him/her to do Usagi.

But Mr. Sakai said he never would sell original art pages or UY art via mail before too. Everyone is allowed to change their mind, right?

Still as long as Mr. Sakai continues to create the best creator own comic we should just enjoy the stories (I still have to pick up issue #93 to see what everyone is talking about. Arrrgh!) Enjoy it while you have it.

Peace,

maka

I have no plans to stop doing the series. In fact, I've declined more lucrative offers to work elsewhere so I can continue working on Usagi.

That's very good to hear, though I have no idea how you do it! Your dedication to Usagi is an inspiration.

That is both great and terrible news!

It is great that you enjoy working with or on Usagi Yojimbo so much that you turn down better paying work.

It is terrible that there is still such a limit on your earnings from Usagi Yojimbo after all these years.

If income was equal to quality of craftsmanship, you should have become a multi-millionaire several times over by now.

Well if Stan can keep up the gut-wrenching drama that the book has been experiencing forever, well, I'll still be around to give him my money.

Yeah, I'm still new to UY (just finished book 3: Wanderer's Road), but I already think the UY series is the best comic, series, and character ever. As soon as I catch up to book #19 (and in July, #20), I'll start reading the comics, and I'd love for it to continue on for a long time...

I agree completely.

As for miniseries, I would be more than happy to read them, if any were to ever become available. I think a miniseries following Gen's (mis)adventures would be particularly enjoyable. Bounty hunting, boozing, gambling, and dealings with immoral women. Oh, how the hijinks would ensue.

Great news indeed.

Of course, now we need to clone you so that we can also get ongoing series featuring Jotoro, inspector Ishida, and (most importantly) Sasuke.

Aww, who am I kidding? Usagi will always be enough for me :D
