And that Snakes on a Mother <expletive> Plane is gonna be one bad arse movie
(yes Samuel L Jackson does rock... that presentation was brilliant, well worth the 2 hour "wait" I had in Hall H to see it heh)
The SNL presentation after it with Triumph the Insult Dog was equally as funny... if some of it gets shown on Conan O'Brien, Kris and I may end up partly in shot

Day 3: Friday (Star Wars Day)
Woke up and headed straight to the Exhibit Hall to distribute some of the new black edition Albedo NR 2 T-Shirts to UYD Members. Ended up being a little late due to the con's as-always sub-par and grossly disorganized cattle-prodding system! I hate having to sneak past security when they're scratching their heads wondering why they're there in the first place, but a Shogun's gotta do.....
Anyway, besides that little glitch, and after a cool discussion with Zorak-san on the Usagi/Tomoe "between the panels" love affair that recently took place in the pages of UY, I was able to distribute some of the new shirts. I also tried getting some info on UY #100, but Stan still had no idea what Diana Schutz has in store for him. The consensus is an issue featuring other creators' renditions of Usagi -- in story form -- with at least a cover by Stan. Tomorrow I'm going to ask him what that other "secret" was all about...

The pix above feature a few of the UYD members who came to claim their shirts. UYD-Shugyosha John Healey picked up a Space Usagi cover (also featured on the DHC Space Usagi Ash Can).
Once the shirts were done with (I only missed a couple UYD members), I went to the Star Trek 40 and Dark Horse 20 panels (had to juggle between the two). No major Trek news beyind some repeat info on the next movie, but Trek is still alive...albeit comatose for the time being.

The DHC panel was also cool, with Stan in appearance along with other DHC pro's discussing their history with Dark Horse. Stan the veteran pointed out that Usagi is two years older than DHC.

After Trek and DHC, we stayed for the Heroes panel..and boy was I glad! We were treated to a 72-minute pilot that rocked! This is the next big thing in TV for sure folks! A great alternative look at superheroes, the series promises great storytelling and action sequences, along with cool super-power ideas done with class. The entire cast showed up to answer fans' questions. This panel was jammed with people!

After the Heroes panel, we had to go check in to our new hotel (don't ask), so took a breif intermission from the Con. We returned in time for the Star Wars Spectacular, armed with light sabers!

Steve Sansweet was on hand to host the annual Star Wars panel as always. He discussed everything from the 2008 CGI TV series that takes place during the Clone Wars, to the live action TV series that will appear in 2009 or 2010 that takes place between Ep 3 and 4, to the latest Star Wars and Indiana Jones video games, to Celebration 4 that will take place in Los Angeles (!!!), to the 2007 New Years Day Rose Parade featuring the 501st Legion of Stormtroopers, to the new upcoming "totally original" DVDs of Star Wars as it appeared completely unaltered in the 70s-80s theaters. All in all a great panel. Check out the R2-D2 beenie!

Hall H was packed with Star Wars fans from all over the galaxy...Jedi, Sith, Fetts, Storm Troopers, and other characters appeared en masse.
Next up was the Jim Henson panel, featuring infor on the sequel to everone's favorite puppet movie, the Dark Crystal, dubbed "The Power of the Dark Crystal". Featuring Lisa Henson and Brian Fround, who's doing the design work, this one looks to bea a real treat! And yes, it WILL feature puppets!!!! Combined with CGI effects and environments, this new movie will be something that has never been done before. No footage yet, but the Henson company is hard at work producing this hot new film!

Next it was off to the Klingon Lifestyles festival for some intergalactic Trek fun with the crew from the IKV Stranglehold! Always a blast!!!

After the Klingon Invasion, it was off to go see Clerks 2 Pacifc Theaters in the Gaslamp District part of Downtown San Diego...and it was great!! Finally, for the first time in awhile I was not let down by a movie! This one beat expectations! I'm going to personally thank Kevin Smith tomorrow at his panel for this one! Rosario Dawson was superb, as were Jay, Bob, Randal, and Dante! A+!!!!

Tomorrow...the Dojo Gathering and a lot more...time to get some sleep!! But first more light saber fun!

i am quite afraid by the presence of Genndy Tartakovsky as director (seen on imdb).... wait and see, as a fan of puppets and Henson's movies i hope we will see a marvelous movie.Next up was the Jim Henson panel, featuring infor on the sequel to everone's favorite puppet movie, the Dark Crystal, dubbed "The Power of the Dark Crystal". It's been a blast so far, I've done huge conventions before but this is something on another scale really. Just a pity there is SO much going on that you know you can only sample a tiny part of it all.
I just hope that the usual con I do each year (CGE) is on the following weekend from Comicon next year so I can do both
Expect plenty of pics from me when I get back and upload. Some interesting stuff from the big panels in Hall H and various other shows I attended. The Rodriguez/Tarentino panel today for GrindHouse was excellent, they showed a 5 minute trailer of footage from Rodriguez's side of things and it was just a complete blast. Look forward to it! If you thought you'd seen all zombie movies, you haven't seen this heh.
//now waves hi to all the dojo members he saw today
I think Todd managed to get a proper pic taken eventually (after getting the camera to behave!), but I'll post my own group pic as well.
I also command a lifetime of hell for the BADWORD who stole Stan's money. Yes, someone decided to apparently make off with the moneybox Stan was using some point late on Friday. I'm sure Todd will tell more when he posts here. But that's the sort of thing that really makes me sad.

Day 4: Saturday (the Day from Hell)
This morning woke up a little late and warped over to the Robotech Shadow Chronicles panel, while VikingBabe went to the Lost Season 3 panel (featuring Daniel Dae Kim and Jorge Garcia). Robotech's panel was somewhat uneventful as usual. No real previews that we haven't seen before. All they had was a PowerPoint with rehashed info that we already knew about. The only real eventful thing that happened was they revealed they finally signed a deal with a distributor, Funimation. Overall it was an OK panel, but I had wished I was in the Lost panel...

After Robotech, I hung around for the Kasuo Koike panel. Koike, the author of the Lone Wolf and Cub manga, had never before appeared at Comic-Con, so this was a big deal. He answered many questions and discussed Lone Wolf 2, coming out soon.

After Koike, it was back down to the evil Hall H! This time for Quentin Tarantino (expert director of awesom movies) and Rosario Dawson (really hot upcomer who's appeared in Sin City, Clerks 2, Xena, and many other things). Kevin Smith (Clerks 2 director) was supposed to make an appearance, but got stuck in traffic and was set back a few hours. We also got to catch Ray Bradbury!

After giving up on Kevin Smith (Rosario came out on stage to fill in for him, was even on the phone with him), decided to head to the exhibit hall to take care of a few things. First, took a few more detailed shots of Stan's booth and filled in for Sharon for awhile as she went to get Stan's lunch. It's always a pleasure working at Stan's booth. This time I was fortunate enough to take some shots of Stan working on a really cool commission piece of a female samurai rabbit!

I also got to chat with Stan's son Matthew, who asked to become a Dojo Member. Of course, I agreed.
He also pointed out that while he was shopping the floor for martial arts weoponry, he spotted a copy of Albedo on sale for a whopping $2000! I asked him where it was so that later on I could track it down and shoot a pic for the Dojo to gawk at.
I also heard about what happened with Stan and that basically the equivalent to his cash register was stolen by an unscrupulous individual on Friday near the end of the day. What a downer. My sympathies go to Stan for this most dishonorable act of theivary. Hopefully karma will catch upto whoever committed this. I'll let Stan provide more details, if he chooses to do so, when he returns to the board.
I also finally got a chance to meet up with Brian Froud, another creator whom I am a big fan of. I got to chat wih him for a bit about the [hopefully] upcoming Power of the Dark Crystal movie. He's been busy working on preliminary design work for the film, which takes place in the future. Exactly how far into the future remains to be seen, but approximately 1000 Dark Crystal years have passed. Familiar characters, like Jen and Kira, make return appearances (Gelflings could have long life spans or even be immortal). I also got him to sign my limited edition DVD edition of the Dark Crystal...sweet!!

Afterwards, it was back to Stan's booth for the 10th Anniversary Dojo Meet and the Albedo NR 2 t-shirt drawing at 3:30pm. After the t-shirts were awarded to their lucky winners, the Dojo gathered together for photos. It appears to be getting harder and harder every year to coordinate photos with all the people traffic, but somehow we manage. Sharon once again did the honors for the group shot.

After the Dojo Meet, it was off the Sony Spider-Man 3 panel. We got in line early enough, or so we thought...eventually they told us there was no way we'd make it in because the Hall H had reached capacity. I was heavily disappointed. After waiting in line in the beating sun for about an hour and a half, we gave up. I decided to go back to the exhibit hall and hunt down that $2000 copy of Albedo NR 2...with luck! I also managed to take more pics for the sites of the Con...Alex Ross's booth, the Alien Queen, Captain America & Angel, the Joker, Kevin Eastman drawing TMNT, Elektra, more Klingons, Wolverine, Deathstrike, Medusa from Clash of the Titans, the Twilight Zone Robot, the Gjostbusters (always in appearance), and the Star Wars booth!

Afterwards, we decided to see if ol' Kevin Smith showed up, and he did! Awesom panel and it definitely made up for the Spider-Man 3 loss. That and they were passing out free Spider-Man 3 baseball caps after the Kevin Smith panel... sweet again!

Next up was the Masquerade...after missing out on the ticket distribution, we decided to catch in in the sails pavillion. We saw Kim Leonardo get down with the rest of the TMNT as their leader Leonardo! Sorry the shots didn;t come up, but the room was dark and the screen was not very bright! It was great though!

Thanks Todd, for all the great photos of Stan and his booth, and the convention in general. The pictures of Stan's female samurai rabbit drawing in various stages of completion are a real treat. (hopefully, you will upload the full-size versions of the pictures of Stan, his booth, and the Dojo group shotsTodd Shogun wrote:Day 4: Saturday (the Day from Hell)

Of course, a big welcome to the Dojo to Matthew. (That means we will now have a Dojo member with access to some real insider info!

It is terrible to learn that some pathetic lowlife would stoop to stealing from the nicest guy in comics.
What was the turn-out for Dojo members for both the the convention in general and group picture in particular?
Did I see a photo of Groopie (and Usagi fan) Gary Grossmann in with the other Dojo group photos?
Again, thanks for sharing your photos and experiences at this years convention.
Abayo......

Harmony Gold did not specifiy when exactly Robotech will be released. Most likely sometime later on this year or next year. And no Voltron news (just some new toys).
Yes that's Gary Grossmann. He appeared while I was filling in at Stan's booth. Great guy to talk with!
The Dojo turn-out was good, as was the t-shirt drawing. Some UYD mebers at the Con could not make it to the gathering (Glenn Masuda, Robert "Dranatha", and Adam Gilbert), but overall it was a great turnout! I appear to be missing one of the Dojo group photos with Stan's son in it. Hey Mayhem, do you have it???
I've uploaded the full size (really big) versions of the photos in http://usagiyojimbo.com/conventions/sdcc2006/fullsize

What is this?

Is it the original art or are these available as posters?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
Thanks again for bringing the San Diego experience to the rest of the Dojo.

I got two pics Sharon took of the group at the gathering, I'll check them and upload when I get back home (Tuesday)Todd Shogun wrote:Hey Mayhem, do you have it???

So people didn't realise Kevin Smith was gonna be back at 6:30pm? Well poo. We saw the line for Hall H after the Usagi meet and didn't bother cos we expected people to stay behind for KS afterwards, but I guess if you queued up and got in Todd, then enough people left!
Great to have seen all, great to have met Stan, I got another drawing from him about 5 minutes before the end as a sort of birthday pressie from Kris and I have no idea what we're gonna do tonight. Maybe see if there's a cinema or something nearby to chill before flying back tomorrow.
With a breeze comes a storm, but then you'll all be washed away...

Re: Kevin Smith, we literally walked in with no line at all around 6:30! Guess people really gave up...it was a great talk as always!
One last thing I forgot, remember that top secret classified info that Stan mentioned here awhile back, and that he'd not be able to talk about it until at the SDCC? Well i asked him about it again and he's still not allowed to say anything due to contractual agreements. The "Company" who has the licensing for whatever it is has the exclusive rights to make the announcement, and Stan can't say anything. Stay tuned!
