General discussion about Usagi Yojimbo, the comics, the stories, the characters, collectibles, TV appearances, Stan Sakai, Space Usagi, Nilson & Hermy, and all other related topics.
I actually stopped to look at the cover of that comic in the store the other day, because of the take-off on the lone Wolf and Cub image. As soon as I realized it was Catwoman, I quickly put it back on the shelf.
I wonder how somebody who has never read or seen a Lone Wolf and Cub comic sees that cover? Something like "Wow, a very domestic picture of Catwoman witha kid. Weird!"
I won the Ursa Major Award for Best Anthropomorphic Comic, presented at another convention which I did not attend. It was given to me at my booth.
Maka--your soda-drinking buddy stopped by to thank me for the bottle of Bitter Kas that I sent him. I don't think he especially liked it. His comment: "It's really bitter."
Dark Horse was giving out a bunch of Usagi freebies--last year's magnetic book marks with the Fathers and Sons image, the latest UY comic, the DH 20th anniversary pin-up book with Frank Miller's Usagi and my Sin City, post cards with the image from Glimpses of Death, and the Usagi cling-ons.

What's wrong with Catwoman? Its actually very good.
And every geek worth his or her mouse cord knows about Lone Wolf and Cub.

With all the Cons that do exist, you must win time to time some awards that you didn't expected ?
I did not know about the Ursa Majors until someone told me I had won one. I did not know about the Mexican Silver Pen Award until I was sitting in the audience. We were told that we had to be there for a program. I was told by Dark Horse that I had won 4 YALSAs (Young Adult Library Services Awards), but had to admit that I had never heard of it. That is one of my favorites, though. Not only because it sounds neat, but because it is a mainstream award that might get Usagi into more libraries.

Stan, what was her correct name from your studies in mythology again?

My art is of a Gaki, specifically a Jikki-niku-gaki or flesh eating hungry ghost. I've used gaki in Usagi stories before. According to Japanese Buddhist scripture there are 36 varieties of gaki, divided into two categories--"of the world" and "among me". I used Cel-Vinyl, a medium I've just started using and am having fun with.
They are both jikiniki. The color piece was modeled on a Heian woman, with the long, straight black hair and moth eye brows. The b/w piece was based on a courtesan. The grabbing of her hair is a common motif in Japanese art, and represents determination and power.
Except i adore those Jikki-niku-gaki, i found a korean blog about SDCC of this year with a great photo of Stan and Sharon (and an Elvis trooper too !): http://wired.daum.net/culture/article00764.shtm
in fact i was searching about the korean edition of Usagi, because i believed you told me Stan that you were (or should be) published there.

Congrats!

Mike emailed me and asked how to get ahold of you at SDCC (and thanks to this board, I knew). I'm glad he was able to thank you in person. Thank you again for sending him a bottle. Hopefully he picked up a comic or two from you as well (I've been trying to get him to read your work).
Wow! Awesome Peice! Almost all my faves, Usagi, Jotaro, Gen, Noriyuki and Tomoe. But, no Chizu?!
Anyone know if there's ever been a peice drawn with
A) Usagi, Jotaro, Gen and Chizu.
B) Usagi, Jotaro, Noriyuki and Tomoe.
Man, I hate being a comics fan and living in the UK. A) comics arn't liked as much over here/arn't as respected much, and B) We have no Cons, and USA is too far away to get up and go to the Cons you guys have...
