Lea Hernandez benefit auction

[Stan Sakai]

Friend and comic artist Lea Hernandez had a house fire. Her family is fine, but they lost everything, including a few pets.

CAPE, a small convention in Dallas, is sponsoring an art auction in which all the proceeds will go to Lea. I donated a couple of drawings, as did a few other artists. I'm still waiting to hear the particulars about if it is possible to bid via phone or e-mail.

Silent Auction

If these are published pieces where are they published they look like back covers. I won the number #1 piece at the auction last night. I bid 380 is this about right for that piece.

Congratulations on winning the "Original art by Stan Sakai #1" auction, you tripled my token bid (I am so broke this time of the month) on that one.

Did you post a bid by email or were you actually present at the auction? If you were at the auction, did you catch the selling price for Stan's other piece of art?

As for the price of Original Art by Stan, it goes for a decent amount when it appears on ebay, especially if it is a older and rarer piece, a more deailed piece, or something which has been published somewhere. I am not sure how much Stan sells original art for at the conventions now.

Anyways, it was a nice amount going towards a great cause.

I was present at the auction. The other piece sold for 125.00. This was a live art auction. I was doing a 24X36 batman painting while the first piece went up for auction, and I did not have a proxy to bid for me. So Scott Kurtz another artist and the creator of PVP won it. He would of had to pay more If I was bidding. I am still trying to figure out if I over paid or that is inlien with Mr. Sakai's work. I am still trying to figure out if this is published or a commission style sketch aswell.

At $125, my tokan bid for this piece was a lot closer to the actual winning bid.

As I said before, it was all for a great cause, and I would definitely have bid more if it had not been bill paying time.

Hi Kris,

I sent you a reply through Diana.

I don't think that piece has been published. As you may know, I do not sell published story pages (with one exception). I do sell convention drawings--that is, drawings done especially to sell at cons and signings. Many of them do get published as back covers, in the UY hardcovers, sketchbooks, role playing game books, etc. The publishers pick out which ones they want to use, and I do not keep track of them.

I have been told many times (sometimes even by the purchaser) that I underprice my art. Some people have even insisted that I take more than what I had priced it at. I would have sold that piece for lower than what you paid for it, however keep in mind that I do not sell through the mail or internet. I sell art at personal appearances. Most people get my art directly through me, or through a friend/agent who got it from me, or through e-bay for which you would have paid a lot more than you did.

Thank you for purchasing the art. The money really goes to a go cause.

I went through the Dojo's up-to-date cover gallery (thanks Gaffey) which now also features the back cover art for all the issues since Stan's convention pieces have started appearing there, and neither piece which were auctioned have been published on the back cover of an issue of Usagi Yojimbo.

That still leaves a possible appearence in one of the sketch books, or maybe the RPG game book, or even in one of the hardcover editions according to what Stan just posted.

Thanks for the information. I am happy to own the piece. I also got the letter that stan included with the art. I wouldn't have been able to get something cool like that if I would have purchased directly.
