Samurai vs Ninja

Post by KairiYojimbo »

Okay, I get it.

Ninjas are dishonourable and all that.

But, both samurais and ninjas kill people, so what's the deal?

Sure, ninjas do sneak attacks, and samurais just strike forward.

I also understand that ninjas are assassins and stuff.

I know something about samurais and ninjas, trust me..

Several hours a week of watching the TMNT episodes Real world 1 and 2 can do that to a person.....

But still: Samurais can't sneak and use the environments to fight and hide like the ninjas can, and ninjas don't always give up when they actually should..

Well, in the end it's really fun everytime Usagi freak out over ninjas.

That happened in an RPG myself and a friend are writing..

Usagi fell asleep once, and nothing could wake him up.
Then we made Leo take his swords, and he woke up screaming:
" STAY AWAY FROM MY SWORDS, NINJA ASSASSIN!!"

Man, I love adding the fact that he actually hates ninjas...Hehe!

Well, what's your opinions on ninjas and samurais, and what would you honestly be yourself?

I can't decide...

As you said, there's no real difference between the two. Don't mix up the men themselves and the institutions they're involved in.

To spoof a famous song, I'd say :
"Believe me when I say to you
I hope the ninjas love their children too."

despite their roles as assassins, in any actual fight situation... like when samurai are armed for instance, they would be better scouts than actual fighters, so I'd say that samurai are better than ninja, because in 1 on 1 combat, the ninja's sneakyness wont help him against a fulled armed and armored samurai.

Gotta go with Samurai.

They got better outfits and swords.

And I never thought Ninja as dishonourable. They had a purpose and served their Lord much in the same way as Samurai did. Nothing wrong with that. Gotta pay the bills somehow.

The same question was asked some time ago in a Spanish forum I'm in. About the whole topic, I would go with no one. Both ninja and samurai are equal and different in their own ways.

Actually, the ninja vs samurai rivalry isn't as present in real past than in the fiction we read and/or see.

We know samurai are from the noble class - well, not really "noble", but y'know what I mean - and loyal warriors to their Lord. In fact, as we know, samurai means "the one who serves" - more or less - and their honour and their loyalty are above any other things and they'll die in the name of their Lord. That's something we've also seen in Usagi Yojimbo.

Another thing is that some samurai had been so used to being "above the normal people" that they abused of their limited, yet not small power over the villagers. That's something we shouldn't forget about samurai... that and how ronin weren't so appreciated as Usagi could be.

About ninja, people say they're more like assassins, but I would say that they were more of spies and scouts than simply assasssins. I should compare them with our current spionage services, though with the limits of their era. Besides that, ninja have their own code of honour and, as we see in UY comics, they lived for dying... someday, somewhere, but they would never fear death - nor samurai would.

What really amazes me about ninja is the large amount of stories and legends about them and their supposed magical powers - mainly because the story of Sarutobi Sasuke -, and how they could use those legends to favour themselves - maybe you know this, but some ninja wore red clothes so when they were hurt people couldn't see the blood and think they were invincible -.

But after all this senseless text... yeah, I'm not going to one side or another. They have their things, but can't say "I'm with...". What interests me the most is the contrast between actual ninja and samurai and who they're portayed in fiction - and no, I don't want to know a thing about overrated Naruto. xD

Thank you Feadraug.

You opened my eyes a lot now. Hehe!

But still, it is funny when Usagi always freaks out about the ninjas
being assassins and that line: I HATE NINJA!!

Hehe, cracks me up everytime... 8)

You're welcome. Maybe the information isn't that accurate, but I did my best from what I know and what I've been searching through books and Internet.

About what you comment, let's say that this is Usagi's point of view about the ninja clans... specially as the Neko have been working for Lord Hikiji - and he has fought so many Neko ninjas - and the Komori have been quite a menace too. And we can't forget the mole ninjas, the Mogura clan.

I believe that from Usagi's experience and point of view ninjas are assassins.

Ninja, as long as I can do all those impossible moves like fly through the air spinning before I deliver a powerful kick to someone's chest, knocking them into a wall where they leave an imprint, and can vanish into the darkness as if I had magic, and I could use cool powder to set off smoky explosions to cover my departure or arrival, and could look good in black, and....

I think I'd go with being a ninja simply because my interest in ninjas goes back earlier. I wasn't really into samurai that much until I started watching Kurosawa movies when I was about 17 or so.

Also, are there any songs like this about samurai? :P NIIIIIINJAAAAA!!!!!

Anyone ever seen the old Hong Kong movie Duel to the Death? That's a pretty cool ninja movie.
