What kind of music don't I like? ;)

-The Beatles are my favorite group.
-Patty Griffin in my current favorite singer. (new album out soon!)
-Paste magazine is my favorite music magazine (great exposure to new music with their monthly sample cd).

And on Monday, I'm going to see http://www.jakeshimabukuro.com/ for FREE at UCSB hub at lunch. I haven't heard of him before, but I bet he will be one favorites after the performance.

Peace,

maka

Well,
there are sooooo many bands I like....
it ranges from Sonic Youth to Loreena McKennitt,
from Abwärts to ZZ Top 8) ,
from Nigel Kennedy to Dead Kennedys,
from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Noir Desire,
from Tangerine Dream to Kraftwerk,
from Rolling Stones to Stone Roses,...

and don't forget the classics:
Bach, Beethoven, Orff, Holst,....even Phillip Glass...

and then there are some local bands I like:
Apparatschiks (they claim to come from Tabakistan... No, don't try to find it on the map, they are from Berlin  )

Seeed (no typo, they spell themselves with triple e)

Boss Hoss (new Country interpretation of popular songs; YEEEHHAA!)

My daughter has taught me to like Ritter Rost (Rusty Knight, I think) as well...
Greetings from overseas

I use Last.FM to scrobble all of the music I listen to. According to my listening habits, my top 20 artists are:

The Beatles
They Might Be Giants
Bob Dylan
Wilco
The Black Keys
The White Stripes
Radiohead
Elliott Smith
David Bowie
Pavement
Neil Young
Led Zeppelin
The Arcade Fire
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Who
The Rolling Stones
The Weakerthans
Kings Of Leon
The Doors
The Strokes

If a few other people use Last.FM, we could set up a Usagi Yojimbo group and then we'd always know what other members are listening to. It would even create a combined chart of our listening habits, effectively showing what music Usagi Yojimbo readers listen to the most.

Considering the forum, I am surprised no one, myself included, has yet mentioned Kodo or any of the other Taiko groups. After seeing Kodo perform a couple years ago, I bought a couple greatest hits CDs and a live DVD of theirs.

I also really enjoyed the all-girl taiko group which was used in the Mitsubishi commercial a couple years ago.

I grew up listening to Bob Dylan, but I was amazed when I learned that a smidgen of a song used in a Victoria's Secret commercial which I really liked was by him. I went out and found the CD it was on immediately.

Generally, I like anything that isn't Nashville-style Country or modern Jazz.

I like AOR stuff......Journey, Boston, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Toto, etc. I also love the occasional soft rock, like Air Supply.

I also love 'extreme' music. Death Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal, Grindcore, Doom Metal, etc.

I love bands like Bolt Thrower, Nile, Deicide (some of it), Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Suicidal Tendencies, My Dying Bride, etc.

here's a video from one of my favorite's. Unfortunately they broke up a while back. 16 horsepower is the band:

the lead singer David Edwards has a new band which is actually even better called Wovenhand. I also like REM, Nickel Creek, Bela Fleck (and the Flecktones!), Chris Thile and Ben Folds. I could go on but you get the idea. :)

I just watch "Whiskey on a Sunday" tour DVD. That band has a lot of fun energy.

I also like Sinead O'Connor, especially her last two studio albums (Sean-Nos Nua and Faith and Courage). Wilco is great, along with The Weepies, Bare Naked Ladies, and M Ward are also on my cd player now days.

And Jake Shimabukuro was amazing. He played two George Harrison songs (While my guitar gently weeps and Something), a Sarah McLachlan's Ice Cream, and bunch of originals that made the ukulele sound like it was a classical guitar, banjo, harp, nothing like a ukulele. And he was nice too, aloha spirit.

Ah, music is so great.

Peace,
