TMNT Movie Premiere in Hollywood

Post by Todd Shogun »

A sunny day and quite a major turn-out for the TMNT movie premiere in Hollywood today. The movie started at 12 noon, but I got there around 10:30 to snap a few photos for the UYD. The premiere was at the Mann Grauman's Chinese Theatre right next to the Hollywood & Highland center.

Comic and not-so-comic characters were hanging around along Hollyweird Blvd. Reminded me of Comic Con...Batman, Pinhead, Marilyn Monroe, Demons, Charley Chaplin....but no Ninja Turtles!

The very front of the theater had a cool area for premiere movie goers...

I met up with Stan, his daughter Hannah, and cartoonist Jim Lujan shortly thereafter picked up our official TMNT movie tickets at will call, and entered the green-carpeted "turtle zone" area just out front.

What a cool setup! They were giving away free TMNT masks and pizzas. The big surprise giveaways were copies of the new TMNT video game for X-Box 360, Playstation, and Nintendo Wii, which they had playing on giant plasma screens in the 'zone....seriously! I grabbed a copy of the Wii and XBox versions.

After some more photos, we proceeded inside. I was lucky they didn't say anything about my camera, as I was able to get some cool shots inside the theater. The consession stand was all TMNT'd out, with posters plastered everywhere, and patrons could help themselves to free popcorn and sodas in official TMNT boxes and cups.

We then entered the theater itself. Quite an awesome spectacle in it's own right. In each and every seat there was a TMNT gift bag, filled with cool collectibles like a TMNT action figures, pencils, movie-edition Airdheads candy, and other cool stuff. I got a Leonardo figure myself (him being my fave and all).

After a few more photos and stuff, Stan spotted Kevin Eastman and his family. We headed over to their seat to say hi and take a photo. Kevin was there with his wife and baby (Shane Eastman was born during last year's San Diego Comic Con!). Peter Laird did not make it, but we heard his wife and daughter were there somewhere...

The movie started promptly at noon to an auditorium filled with enthusiatic industry and studio people with their families.

At this point it was time to put the camera away for fear of getting kicked out. I was really surprised I was allowed to take it this far, but the TMNT premiere people seemed pretty cool. Several of the staff offered to take pictures for me!

TMNT Movie Review (no spoilers)

The movie was decent, not at all as hokey as I was prepared for. So Kim and Cylnee you guys were right, and I'm sure you'll love it! The CGI animation was totally awesome, with the turtles moving along the rooftops of New York skyscrapers just like they were portrayed in the original Mirage comics from the mid-80s. The character designs of the turtles themselves were great, not perfect but great. I did like the fact that they were in some ways similar to the proportions from the older comics (like large feet and hands). The only thing I didn't like was their legs seemed kinda close together. I dunno, anyway.... The movie itself was epic, maybe a little too epic for the Turtles, but entertaining nonetheless. Don't expect a continuation of the sponge-suit movies of days old. Those are history. This movie pretty much reinvents the Turtles' on-screen personas. TMNT fans will relish in how much action there is...some of the fight scenes were unbelievable. Mike's skateboard through the sewers scene in the beginning was "killer", as were Raph's heavy metal motorcycle vigilante scenes. The Foot Ninja Clan looked great, as did the monsters, but the human characters bared way too much resemblance to characters from Shrek and The Incredibles..a bit too cartoony in comparison with the Turtle's designs. Splinter was okay, but again kinda cartoony. The storyline was solid, and light years past the previous movies in it's epic proportions. This movie contains a LOT of stuff...too much to mention here -- you'll just have to go see it for yourself.

I'm so glad you had a great time, Todd-sama!!!
:D
I heard Kevin E. was there after all, with his lovely wife and baby, too!!
And I'm very happy you enjoyed it!!! (See, you can trust your UY Dojo members that happen to be TMNTers.)

I am very much looking forward to this movie. I had my doubts based on the first stuff that was posted about it, because it looked like a video game quality movie that would never fly on the big screen. When we got the footage at ComicCon last year, then heard Kevin M. speak so sincerely about the characters and story and all...I was so relieved. Then saw more goodies at WonderCon.
And now, I know it's going to be good.
I just have to wait until April to see it, because I fly to Japan on the morning it comes out, and I had no great fortune befall me to see it early. It won't be opening in Japan, even though it turns out our hotel near Mibu (home of the Shinsengumi historically speaking) has a theatre right near it. drat!
I must practice the art of extreme patience, and great care in avoiding major spoilers (minor ones I've seen a number of clips already). But I will enjoy your pictures when you post them as something to tide me over!!
Thank you for sharing your experience.

Would have loved to be there and finally meet Kevin E. :)

Still, the film opens here on Friday so I will probably be out watching next weekend!

Glad you enjoyed it, too, Stan!!
Based on the non-spoiler reviews I've read, I'm going to really enjoy it.

Although I think the Raph fans will love it the most. Just seems I've seen a lot of clips where Leo is having a rather hard time in this movie....
I'm also glad to hear that Kevin E was there, too. It was fun to see a pic of Kevin, Julie and their baby.

The Leo fans (like myself) will probably love it the same. Not to give away too much, but the movie is basically about Leo....his relationship with Raph, his struggles to be an effective leader of the group..... with some action (okay a LOT of action), ninjas, fantasy, magic, and monsters thrown in for good measure. Just imagine some of the better TMNT comics with the likes of Savanti Romero or even the classic TMNT/Cerebus crossover...just set in NYC. My initial hunch was that there'd be a lot of Peter Laird in the movie, and I think I was right (though I bet Eastman was pretty impressed as well).

So Kim...how's Japan?? I'll expect photos and a travel report the minute you get back :D

yeaaaah!
Thank you, Todd for the pics! (and the confirmation it won't be a bash Leo fest.)
:P
As for Japan, I leave Friday. Got two days of iajutsu/battojutsu training with our sensei's sensei, then it's off to Kyoto and Nara! I promise to do at least as good a job with a report as you and Stan do on your reports when I get back. Can't let our Shogun down, right?
So how were the pizzas??

We had the choice of pepperroni or cheese. I had the former. I've had better, but we're talking free food here.

Wow, seeng all those photos really got me wanting to see the movie. My dad has kept telling me to go see it, but my brother doesn't want to go because he dislikes the fact that its cg, unlike the old ninga turtles movies. Well I hope its atleast as good as the first and second TMNT movies.

Also, according to a wikipedia article i read, the voice of Splenter is played by Mako. They said he finished voice acting the part before he died, so i was surprised to hear about that. If this is true, then thats one reason I should go and see it.

For anyone who doesn't know who Mako is, he was a voice actor who recently did the voice for the character Iro in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The pizzas were good, but cold!

Yes, Mako was the voice of Splinter. I was surprised by the voice actors...Sarah Michelle Gellar (as April), Laurence Fishbourne, Patrick Stewart, and others.

Shredder IS in the movie, but I am not going to say how and to what degree. You'll just have to find out for yourself. Keep in mind he is not the major villain, but the Foot Clan plays a big part.

Wow - I'll give this one an eye... Both as a grown-up fan of TMNT and since it's one of the last things Mako ever did...

ooo, you got the back of my head and me in a few of those shots! I was trying to get a good pic of the one poster...

Glad you enjoyed it. I was with others who came to watch the crowds-- found out later from this one gentleman that he'd had extra tickets but didn't know that we had none. Just as well-- I'll appreciate it more on opening day!
