Samurai Hulk

Post by Stan Sakai »

I've been asked to contribute an 8-page story for Marvel's yet untitled "independent creators" mini-series. The idea is to let indie creators have a hand in doing a story with Marvel characters. Each comic will have a 8 or 10 page lead-in by an established creator, then 4 page stories by some up-and-comers.

I was thinking of a Samurai Hulk story. I like the visual of an armor-clad Hulk rampaging through a likewise clad army. I just have to think of a story to go around that visual.

Oo. Sounds good.

Will Usagi be in the story, or are you just using Marvel Characters?

Sounds cool! I usually don't have reason to buy comics from Marvel much any more, with the last one having been Sergio Massacres Marvel.

But I believe that this one will be on my pull list.

Now, where have I seen Hulk and Usagi hugging each other friendly lately...??

Sounds like a good idea; will Hulk be human from the start and go "hulk" during the story??

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing it...

I read about the indie creators thing recently and wondered if they were going to ask Stan. I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that you are not only going to be doing it, but drawing one of my all time favourite characters as well (Besides Usagi of course).

I have been collecting Hulk for 21 years now and I can't wait to see your story Stan.

That sounds really cool. Will you have Hulk meet any other Marvel characters? Or will it be just the Hulk?

It will just be The Hulk, but I may refer to him as something else, just to keep the continuity with Japanese folklore.

If you are referring to the drawing in the UY Sketchbook #4, that is supposed to be The Thing from the Fantastic Four hugging Usagi.

My current idea has him starting off as human, then becoming The Hulk. I will have to see if I can fit the story into just 8 pages. I've already had to cut out the part where he fights a band of ninja.

You could have him as a type of unnamed ogre no one's ever seen before. Some kind of majin, at the very least.

The most interesting aspect of the Hulk is his ambiguous nature. He can be the hero, the villain, or even both, depending on the writer. I'm intrigued to see how you'll incorporate a character based on the dramatic release of emotions (not just anger or rage) into the world of feudal Japan.

Ah, sorry for that blunder on my behalf;
I'm not really into these American super hero characters and keep confusing them regularly. Well, yes, I can tell Spiderman from Batman or Superman, but not much more....

Anyway, still looking forward to seeing it.

I don't think I realized this when I first read this posting, but your Hulk story will take place in feudal Japan? Now THAT is an insanely cool idea! I am definitley looking forward to seeing this.

Is there room for a joke about wasabi? This is the green hulk, right? Gamma horseradish.

How about a David and Goliath story? A young small boy goes out to fight a giant to save his farming village. All looks lost until he turns into the Samurai Hulk and battles the entire enemy army.

I too am looking forward to your Hulk story. The Hulk is one of my favorite characters of all time. Those first Lee/Ditko stories captured the imagination. I loved the Defenders too. And the TV show. But let's not talk about the movie.

Peace, maka

I just finished reading "World War Hulk" #1 that just came out yesterday. What a great read and I love John Romita Jr.'s art. He's one of my favorite artists and I always look forward in collecting anything he does. His storytelling is great!!!
