I admit it's perhaps a tad overwrought. Stan does these fast with almost
no embellishments so the shading maybe isn't working. I kinda like it though, there's some nice mark-making in it. I have started a project to do a drawing every day. I've been a professional artist for almost exactly as long as Stan's been drawing Usagi, but I don't draw. I know it's weird but glass is a very different medium and drawing doesn't necessarily relate - that's what I've told myself all these years. Even though most of my gallery work is paintings embedded in glass they're very abstract and very spontaneously done. This drawing excersize has been really interesting - I FEEL how good it is for me - the pathways forging in my brain.. I'm starting to get proportions working a bit (always a bit of a nemesis for me) and a couple of the m I actually like. Not much personal style yet but I just started in ... April fools day actually - HA! Anyway this was May 4's drawing. I would've felt I was cheating to do it as a simple line drawing, I feel I have to spend at least 20 minutes or so for each one. I thought it might be fun and interesting to kinda "flesh" one of these death rattle balloons out - give it a bit of volume and form.
I like the drawing, it looks great. Unfortunately, the thought of Usagi's death kind of bums me out, otherwise I would have commented earlier.
Actually, it makes me think of the winning story in the UY Dojo's fan fiction contest that was held several years back, a story which dealt with Usagi's final battle and the honorable death he achieved. Matthew Pegg, the winner of the contest and author of the story, received an original piece of art by Stan depicting a scene from the story.
I hear ya! Actually I didn't set out to make an Usagi death balloon. It started as a generic one but as I say I wanted to extend the drawing so I started adding things. It just kinda happened. There's one on the back of UY101 by Stan so I didn't think I'd jinx Usagi or anything
I've always loved skulls and I got a tremendous kick out of it when I first saw Stan's little death balloons. It's part of what made me fall in love with the Usagi-verse.
well I've been at it again. Trying to teach myself to draw Usagi. I've done a whole bunch that just look like bad copies of Stan's Usagi but these last two - particularly the one on the bottom I think are a bit more "me". I've been working on the heads so far but I really need to work on bodies my anatomy sucks. Sure is fun though.
edit: I should mention that these and a few before them from today are the first ones I've tried inking on - the others have been just pencil sketches.
NB If this is an inapropriate place to post this and I should start another thread let me know - I didn't think it warranted another thread.
