San Diego--what to bring

Post by Stan Sakai »

It's still about a month before the con, but I'll be in France for a week so I'm starting this thread now.

What would you like me to bring to San Diego? Are you needing a particular issue or book to complete your collection? How about a special commission? I should have most, if not all, the trade paperbacks, but I am running low on hardcovers. So if you want one of those, it is better to reserve one. Reply on this thread or e-mail me. Some have already contacted me.

I have about 10 100th issue posters that I can give out. In the past I've done these things first come/first served. It was pointed out that it's not fair to those that only attend the con on the weekend. So the first 10 people who ask for a poster on this thread will get one. The one stipulation is that you must not already have one. If there are less than 10 people who ask for one, I'll just give away the others to fans. If you get one, make sure you bring a mailing tube so it doesn't get crushed.

I'll be needing another copy of the Spanish Sketch/Art Book -- gave mine away! Anything new/exclusive this year at SDCC?

I'm expecting an advance copy of the Book 21 trade paperback next week, so The Mother of Mountains will be new. I doubt the hardcover will be available by then.

I rushed the printing of Sketchbook #4 in time for Motor City, and I still have lots left for SD.

As funny as it may sound, I was not able to get or find a 100th issue poster  So if you can hold one for me Stan that would be great.

You got it, Robert. I look forward to seeing you next month.

Robert is the owner of the 4 foot tall Usagi statue that I carved with a chain saw and kitchen knife for the Trilogy 2 Tour--unless he tossed it out, for which I don't blame him one bit.

ha! crazy-BADWORD! That must've been fun to make. Was that a solid chunk or laminated. Gary carves molds out of styro all the time but they're not nearly as chunky.
...a chain saw you say

hmmmmm... !

We did the Trilogy 2 Tour in 1998. By "we", I mean Linday Medley, Jeff Smith, Charles Vess, Jill Thompson, Mark Crilley, and myself. We went to a bunch of US conventions, with 8 12 foot crates containing props and a 16 foot aluminum-framed tree. Some of the props were huge standing stones made out of styrofoam. We used huge 2x2x8 foot blocks, which are normally used under boat docks.

We got together in a warehouse in Virginia to make everything from the tree to the crates. Everyone else had some kind of mascot, such as Jeff's 6 foot inflatable Bone (that doesn't sound right). I wanted a mascot, so I spent a couple of hours carving that Usagi figure.

The Tour was my most aggravating and most enjoyable year in comics.

Hmm, I never got one, and I would be honored to be able to get one from you. Also, the hula commission I set up at Motor City Con.

I'll have to remember to check the forum out, I didn't know about the member gathering at Motor City. Wouldn't have been able to make it, but still would have been nice to know about it. :P

See you in San Diego Stan!

You got it, David. Bring a sturdy mailing tube (18" or more) so it doesn't get crushed.

There will probably be a Dojo gathering at the SD Con as well.

By the way, David is the one who commissioned the Tomoe in the Art Nouveau style that was referred to in a posting somewhere recently. That is a part of it in his icon.

It was in a Morna-San's gallery post, i was referring to Alfons Mucha Art Nouveau panel.

David, could you post a scan of your Art Nouveau illustration? thanks.
