Usagi drawings

Post by Stan Sakai »

I've got a nice collection of Usagi drawn by other artists. I recently traded for a couple more at MegaCon. Here they are:

You showed me the Tex when I was at your table at the Con and I must say, as stunning as it is scanned, it's even better in person.

Thanks for sharing!

Were I an artist, trades like these would be one of the best perks of the job. What a fun tradition!

Those are quite nice even if the way that Van Sciver drew the swords is a little bit "off." I enjoy the drawings where Usagi is drawn more like a real rabbit; my favorite example of this is the Geoff Darrow drawing in The Art of Usagi Yojimbo.

Has anyone ever done a drawing of Usagi where he looks like Bugs Bunny?

I thought Ethan would draw Green Lantern or someone he was more familiar with, but he really wanted to draw Usagi. He said he had drawn my characters before. Now I see where.

I've spoken with Ethan at several conventions and he's said that he gets so many requests for either Green Lantern or Batman that he likes to get something different to mix it up a bit.

Those are great sketches, Sensei.

That Van Sciver Gen sketch is awesome. So gritty looking. You wouldn't want to cross that guy in a dark alley!

Is it just me or does the first piece of art in that link have a strong "Eastwood in The Good, The Bad and the Ugly" thing going on?

I love both the Van Sciver sketches. They both have a gritty, realistic look and tone to them. It's interesting to see other artists' takes on the Usagi Yojimbo characters.

Mr. Sakai, has anyone ever asked you to sketch one of their characters for them?
