Hello UYD,

I had a late night at work tonight and got home around 8:30. My wife was reading to the kids a bedtime story and I went to the bathroom. Soon my daughters came in and grabbed my hands and said, "Come on, Dad" as they lead me into their bedroom.

"Great Grandma died." Angela said. Then her little sister and she hugged me. "It's so sad, isn't Dad. You feel sad don't you?" They made a point of maintaining physical contact - to comfort me.

Other words spoken by my 8 year old daughter,

"We cried a lot. It's your turn."

"Sometimes you have to cry, but then it's okay."

"I never had someone die before. There was a baby once (her baby cousin died the day before she was supposed to be born) but I never knew her. This is my first one, I knew her, and she was so kind and good. It is hard."

I called my mother to see how she was doing. She said something Grandma told her years ago, "When I die, look for me in your dreams. I'll come and visit you." My mom said, “I’m looking forward to dreaming tonight.”

I don't feel anything quite yet. I do marvel at the compassion of young children. I am so thankful to have their love.

One thing I'm grateful for is that we were able to visit my grandma the last four summers. Here's a video that I might have shared before of Angela and her Great Grandma Setsu Fukuda:

Thankfully I already took time off of work next week and will be at the funeral.

Peace, maka
