Wish me luck....

Post by Steve Hubbell »

I finally found a place were I could buy copies of the Spanish comic magazine El Wendigo, issue #80 (article on Usagi Yojimbo)and #85 (interview with Stan Sakai), which were published around 1999 and 2000.

I even got a nice deal on them, 1.50 euros for issue #80 and the seller offered to throw in #85 for free. Not bad at all! Of course, with shipping from Spain at 18 euros and an additional $15 western Union fee to send payment, it only cost me $47.40 for two magazines which I have been wanting for the past four years or so since I learned of them.

But, what the heck, it was my birthday, so I went ahead and bought them yesterday. I am sure hoping that they arrive quickly and safely.

Add in the new Belgium issues of Usagi Yojimbo from Enigma which are currently in the mail headed my way, and I have to say that I treated myself to some nice gifts this year.

Abayo....

I agree with Mayhem, that would have been a good opportunity for nice little presents.... :?

So, all we (Europeans) are left with is sending best wishes for your birthday via the Dojo....

...and, of course, wishing you luck on your purchase! :D

Oh, I ask Dojo members for assistance all the time! :D

Spanish Dojo member Ziritrion tried to find me a copy of El Wendigo #85 a few years ago. He did get me the cool Expocomic 2004 poster. Spanish member Monsada helped me in getting copies of the Trama and Dolmen issues I wanted.

AT73 is helping fill in a few issues of the Swedish Usagi from Epix, and Thomas already helped me complete my Schwarzer Turm run of German Usagi (speaking of which, he just sneaked a reply in while I was writing this).

Fanfan has helped numerous times with French editions of Usagi from Paquet, and with getting me a copy of the really neat Scarce Annual magazine.

Dang, just too many Dojo members who have helped me get too many things over the years to try and list them all. Definitely, thanks to all of you!

Perhaps it was just a rhetorical question...

True that too, I was taking it more literal, because I'd like to know where you find such things ;)

Erik at Enigma, Stan's Dutch publisher located in Belgium, really outdoes himself with the comics he releases. The covers, both the front by Stan Sakai and the back covers by various Belguim artists, are just the coolest treat for anyone who is lucky enough to aquire any. Even though they might not feature "new" artwork by Stan on the covers, the fantastic work with the colors done by Solid gives them an all new look. The cover of issue #14 still amazes and mystifies me, trying to figure out just how it was created.

Assuming Stan didn't colour it that way, the background would be a plainscale drawing modified with an orange coloured filter using whatever art package used to put it together. Then overlay the front image in normal colour over the top.

If it IS one image, then you would just mask out the foreground image and only apply the filter to the rest. Actually it's more simple than you think via Photoshop and the ilk.

These are the two images which were used to make the cover. I don't know, just the idea of taking elements from two seperate panels in this story and combined them in this manner seems like such an inspired idea. nd the end result is fantastic in my opinion. Out of nearly two hundred Usagi covers, this one definitely ranks near the top of the list.

(quick trivia question - who can identify which foreign edition these two scans were taken from?)
