We're in the middle of Golden Week--four national holidays within seven days.
April 29 was Showa no Hi--the birthday of the former Emperor Showa who died in 1989. Until 2006, Greenery Day used to be celebrated on this day.
May 3 was Kenpo Kinenbi-- Constitution Day--in 1947 the current constitution was put into effect.
May 4 is Midori no Hi--Greenery Day--dedicated to preserving the environment and nature. The former emperor was a great conservationist.
May 5 is Kodomo no Hi--Children's Day. This was celebrated as Tango no Sekku--Boys' Day. A time when carp streamers were hung on poles, and samurai dolls were put on display signifying power, strength, and success. Girls' day was March 3, but is now known as Dolls' Day.
Rejoice!
Happy Golden Week
