UK based Newbie question...

Post by seagull »

Hiya

Only recently been introduced to Usagi Yojimbo via a friend, and have quickly become hooked. I've read the majority of the graphic novels (am up to book 13ish now), but am keen to expand my collection to other areas.

In particular, I'm keen to buy the two statues that seem to only have been released in the US. I believe they have been deleted now - does anyone know if they are still for sale? I keep looking on Ebay, but they never seem to be listed...
Also, i'm looking to pick up as many back issues as possible. Is ebay the best place for these?

Cheers all.

Welcome :)

You'll find a few of us Brits here on the forum, though everyone is friendly heh...

I see one of the two statues quite often on eBay, though I guess it depends if the sellers will ship outside of the US. The other one turns up not very often. I haven't gotten around to purchasing them myself yet, maybe some point in the future.

As for back issues, there used to be a lot in the past, and I got all the back issues I needed from eBay in lumps. It might benefit trying to order them in bulk from online comic stores (eg. MileHighComics) although anywhere outside the UK, you're gonna be paying for the shipping as much as the comics themselves.

I just sold off most of the spare Usagi stuff I had on eBay, otherwise you might be interested in it. I think I've still got a spare issue #1 (ie. the very first standalone from 1986) still somewhere here. A few others here know that I've purchased some quite hefty pieces for my collection, such is my devotion to the long eared ronin

I've been fortunate to meet Stan twice so far; once at San Diego Comicon 2006 (to which I'll be going back this year) and once last year when he popped to the UK for a day. There is good reason he is called the nicest person in the comic industry :)

Anyhow, welcome to the clan and after more than ten years of reading Usagi here, I'm still amazed and surprised by what Stan manages to write and create...

back issue acquisiton...

Post by go »

Dear Readers,
"Also, i'm looking to pick up as many back issues as possible.
Is ebay the best place for these?"

Buy them directly from Sensei Sakai at the San Diego Comicon.
All the money goes to our Sensei.
He may sign some...
Do you know someone who is going to the San Diego Comicon who could pick them up for you and fly them back in their luggage?

It took me 5 years of driving to many comic book stores in Northern California to collect all of the issues.
Now I wish I had bought them directly to benefit Sensei Sakai.
I have a strong hunter/gatherer urge and hunting the back issues is fun for me.
Happy hunting!
Best wishes to all.

Hello and welcome to the Dojo, Seagull;

I've been lucky enough to get both a complete Fantagraphics and Mirage run from Sensei; shipping and taxes added, they had only cost about 3,00 € each (times 54 = roughly 170 €) And they were all signed by Sensei, no less....

It might still be possible to buy these complete runs on conventions, but it would be safer to kind of pre-order them (i.e. ask Sensei to bring them along to a given convention) and arrange for someone to pick them up to forward them to you (or to smuggle them through declaration.... )....

As go pointed out, the next opportunity would be SDCC.

Since I've been able to get Book 14: Demon Mask as a HC recently, I've got a spare TPB to offer; if you're interested, just PM me.

I think you'll find this forum to be both friendly and helpful, so I've got no doubt you'll enjoy yourself here!
Greetings from overseas

Welcome, and to echo the above, it's better to see if you can buy them from Stan or find someone willing to help out.

I am going to SDCC this year, and if you want, I can find a few things for you and ship them to you. You can PM me on what you are interested in, and I'll do my best.

thank you all for your replies - much appreciated.

This is just one of many reasons that I wished I lived in America !!! Unless we can convince them to host a comicon in England, I am stuck !!!

cynlee - that would be fantastic - I will have a think, and let you know.
