General discussion (non-Usagi Yojimbo related) about all things Japan -- Feudal Japan, Samurai, Ninjas, Anime & Manga, Chambara films, Japanese Pop Culture, Otaku, martial arts, history, sushi, giant robots, Godzilla... anything Japan-related!
I believe that term took on a negative connotation in Japan when an "otaku" went on a killing spree 15 or 20 years ago. It got over it, but resurfaced in that light when another otaku killed 7 people in the Akihabara District just a month or so ago.
