Lubidius - Works In Progress (pencil, ink, and digital art)

Post by Lubidius »

Ok. I'm just posting this now as a starting point for any new fan art I create. If you want to see my so far not that wonderful art-work (NON Usagi related) meander over to my deviantart page, recently created-

http://lubidius.deviantart.com/

Most of what I have there so far are just myself trying out a new WACOM "Bamboo" usb art tablet for my PC. A couple ended up "ok" looking, so I posted them. The other monstrosity is just a Star Wars fan art / character pen and ink that I already showed Stan (Thank you for your VERY USEFUL comments on it).

If you have absolutely NO IDEA what a usb tablet is for a personal computer, here is the one I bought:

http://www.wacom.com/bambootablet/bamboo.php

There is a short demo video there-in.

I will post my Usagi based fan art there, once I complete my first offering. I am enjoying my digital tablet for the pc VERY MUCH, as it is starting to grow my line confidence. (oddly via virtual line, I am gaining confidence in traditional line work).

More in about a week after I get up a few Usagi fan art samples. My goal overall is to just get to the level of being able to illustrate books, novelettes, role-playing materials, graphic novels or other material I create on my own. I figure for the benefit of this dojo (or nausea, roll on floor laughter) -> I might as well practice using the character/s we all love. Though I will mix in my own creations to boot.

More soon... Your comments are more then welcome either here or on my deviantart site. Please keep them to other then one word of 4 letters in length (in other words practical). :)

cya...

I'll try and post a weekly update.

Added a quick fan art piece:

http://lubidius.deviantart.com/art/Usag ... -127736533

Nothing fancy. I have not added dialog to the panel. This was a quick layered sketch in GIMP 2.6 using a wacom(tm) tablet for input. This is my first attempt at layered coloring in GIMP, so bear with me as I improve in my color combination and overall techniques.

The walrus, I just made up. Perhaps from a northern Japanese island , ver very far north :) LOL.

And before you ask, the original intent was for them to fight, but I think they look more like friends about to cover one another's backs. Usagi has the katana in a lowered stance, down and in back of the right leg. This stance hides the length of the sword while attacking. You may remember from the movie The Seven Samurai, this is the stance that was used by Kyuzo just prior to slicing the braggart samurai down in one quick strike.

The result of which looks like this....

Ooooofa. One enemy down.

Kyuzo is my hero. The best of the seven I think. (we can debate that in another thread) :)

Nice walrus! Something which has been missing from Usagi's world. Keep sharing the artwork! :D

Once upon a time, there was a comic called "BUSHIDO BLADE OF ZATOICHI WALRUS" about a blind (you guessed it) sword wielding walrus. Never read any, from what I had "heard" it was pretty bad. But the cover art for the first issue was kind of neat. Unfortunately, It was set up like TMNT, Howard the Duck, or Cerebus, rather than in an all anthropomorphic world like Usagi.....

And in honor of Stan's love of the Beatles, I have named him "Seiuchi Aikouka" or Walrus Lover:

Here is just the start of a new sketch...

Will hold off posting again until this one is fully fleshed out. I think I'll pull the animal characteristics back a notch and cartoonify him a bit more (somewhere in-between the form of this sketch and the previous colored one), but for now, just fleshing out the concept. Was thinking he could have a Penguin man-at-arms as a side-kick (ok wrong continent but that could be a running gag), and polar bear geisha girlfriend... hrrrmmm.....

Still working on it.... added a little side-kick penguin retainer for him. Just a rough sketch still..

http://lubidius.deviantart.com/art/Seiu ... -128433695

It needs a lot of editing.

When all is said and done, I'll try and redo both characters in several poses from several vantage points. Then I'll have to tone them down into many less ink strokes; so they can be repeated more easily and consistently. That is a skill I am still working on, so bear with me. I will re-work them both in traditional media during the process.

More soon...

I'll end up clothing the penguin as well. Just wanted to get the basic look down. I envision him also doing Naginata practice with the walrus, so he'll likely have bunched up hakama (skirted pants of the samurai outfit) in shin gaurds. What will be funny is the pole-arm he uses will likely be 3 times his size. Anyhow, just playing around with characterization overall. Just using usagi's world as a muse. Still learning.

Technical note: looks like IE7 does not like the deviantart websites viewer. Strange, as that is one of the most used browsers on the planet right now. So in case you can't view them, try and use firefox3. When I get a final piece, I'll post it elsewhere so anyone with browser issues viewing them can see the final product.
