Out of print trade paperbacks?

Post by wildfire405 »

Hey folks!

I'm climbing through the trades trying to catch up with ongoing issues. In November I was forced to take a break as Volume 8 (the first Dark Horse book) was back ordered when my local comic store of choice tried to get it for me. It turns out thats going to be re-released as a 25th anniversary in August. (right?)

Well, I found volumes 8 and 9 at a different store just this month--finally--and ordered volume 10. . . which his distributor is saying is now back ordered till mid to late March.

Are they re-issuing all of these books in order? He says 11 is still available, but he questioned for how long. I try to order one a week from my local store, but I'm wondering if I might have to take a different approach and ask you folks if you know what's going on!

Thank you all!

Dark Horse is issueing second editions of books 8, 9, and 10 with a current release date of August. I, personally, do not know if any more of the Dark Horse volumes are considered "out of print" right now, but even if they are, you should be able to still find most of them available in stock in either stores or on-line. Having a comic shop order them through Diamond Comic Distributors might be a little more difficult.

Assistant Editor Brendan Wright gives a great editorial on Dark Horse's project to re-issue Books 8, 9, and 10, as well as some other things to expect this year.

PS,
Check out the current sale at Things From Another World (TFAW) for some great deals on some Usagi books.... :D

I wanted to buy Books 2 and 6 as an introduction to Usagi for some friends coming along with us to Motor City, and I was surprised to see that Book 6 is out of print and fetching $55 right now. I managed to find a slightly damaged used copy for $12, though.

Thanks! I just bought 11 through something. I'm still missing ten--it was the ONE book that was on preorder only. I'll have to dig for 10. Amazon had used ones for 30 bucks. Yeouch.

Time to go to work, though.

You can easily skip volume 10. It's full of great stories, but the only "essential" event that occurs is the first appearance of Sanshobo and, even still, you'll get a good sense of who he is when he appears again later. There are some big moments for Chizu and Inazuma (especially Inazuma's origin), but you won't be confused by anything that happens in later volumes if you skip this one. You have my word as an Usagi addict that you can jump ahead to volume 11 and then backtrack later.

Too late! I found 10. Haa ha. But, well, at least this way I don't have to miss anything. I'm going back and re-reading all of them anyway. I need to get my Japanese names straight. I forget who is who sometimes. Two nights ago I got the fact that Lord Hibi and Lord Hikiji were different characters.

Its a fun book.

Thanks for the help--and the link to that comic site up there! That'll make things fast!

With so many characters and such foreign names, it's understandable. I confuse quite a few minor characters who disappear for a few years and then turn up again later. To this day, I couldn't tell you the name of the guy who gets in a dual with Katsuichi in volume 17 to save my life and, I'm embarrassed to say, I can't recall if the Lord of Owls ever came back after his first ominous appearance (coming up in book 11). I confuse assassins and minor priests like crazy. In fact, I had to read a summary of the latest Jei saga to keep the priests straight in my head.

I feel like I'm Sarah Conner in Terminator. "You're talking about things I haven't done yet in the past tense!" I'll have to see how old the books are I'm reading. I read volume nine this past weekend. Its my 'present day Usagi Yojimbo.

But man, Kalamazoo, Michigan and Ohio. I hope we all get to meet up and shake hands at the Motor City Con!

Aye aye aye. . . this thread should be terminated.

Haa ha!

On the original topic, I ordered volume 10 from a website. It didn't look weird or back ordered until I got my receipt. It said 'new printing.' When I contacted them, they just replied that it is indeed coming in August. Billed me already and everything. I can't wait that long. I want to have these books read before (hopefully meeting Mr Sakai at) Motor City Con!! The search continues, even though I have volumes 11 through 17 coming in the mail. Grr. The completist in me says I have to wait!

You know, there's a decent chance you could actually find them AT Motor City. Also, if you were willing to read the original comic book issues, Volume 10 is the first volume in which the original issues are actually really easy to find. It reprints the beginning of Usagi Yojimbo (vol. 3, Dark Horse) #1 and up.

And, again, you really CAN skip these issues and go back. There are a lot of volumes where you can't do that, but you can with this one.

I ordered 9, 10, and 12 (I can't remember why not 11), back in June '09. I got 12 in Sept 09, and now it says 10 will come in May, and 9 in August. Of course, I've gotten several different dates over the past year, so who knows.

I think I have most, if not all, of the trades. I will be starting a "What should I bring to Motor City" thread in a few weeks. You can request what trades you need then.

Thankfully I've found the hard to find ones am currently reading Volume 20 and making swift progress toward current issues. It seems Yokai is one my store hasn't been able to order. I'm sort of glad for that, because then that will give me something to buy directly from Mr Sakai! I'll post on your forum when you create it!
