Any thoughts as to why this went a bit high?

It's a nice piece but a fairly standard convention sketch. Or did two people just bid high for a random chance and one of them paid more than they thought?

contest

Dear Readers,
This is the kind of situation eBay sellers hope for.
I think auctions like these become a sort of bidding contest.
When I first used eBay I would get bidding fever and spend 7 times what I should have,
trying to win like there was no tomorrow. $35 dollars for a $5 pin.....
I am sorry these profits do not go directly to Sensei Sakai.
You can get this kind of art from Sensei Sakai when he appears at Conventions for very reasonable prices.
People, save your money and travel to meet Sensei Sakai for art like this.
Best wishes to all!

Interesting that you brought up this auction, as it was one I was watching myself. I bought one of the other items the person had up, a Grendel framed poster, and I know they are selling due to hardship, but I was not expecting the sketch to go that high either. Perhaps one day I can commission Stan to do a piece for me to go along with the tip in art he so graciously sold me. Maybe once I am more familiar with his body of work, I will be comfortable asking for something...

...off to read Volume 4 now!
