Comic book conventions rarely pay an appearance fee to anyone except its very top tier guests. Even then it would usually be as a guarantee, rather than an out right payment. That is, the con would guarantee that the guest (Leonard Nimoy, for example) would make a certain amount of money selling photos or autographs or art. If they do not make that amount, the convention would make up the difference.shaxper wrote:I recently read a rumor that Motor City is not paying its guests anymore. Is that true, Stan? If so, I feel pretty badly about supporting the convention and begging you to make an appearance there.
I fall far short of that guest level, however. The minimum I demand is to have all my transportation and accommodations covered by the convention, as well as free membership(s) and a dealer's table. Some conventions also cover meals, either as an honorarium, hotel credit or a green room or con dinners. Some cons even offer a special event to selected guests. I have gone hot air ballooning, seen Cirque de Soleil, gone white water rafting, and the last convention took some of us for a few days in beautiful Banff. Each convention operates differently.
I enjoy going to conventions. I sell some art and books, meet fans, meet other pros, and, sometimes, see a bit of the area and experience something different. I also like to eat, so get to sample some regional food.
Thank you for your concern, though, but if I did not enjoy it I would not do it.

I'm glad to hear that, Stan. Still, it seems like an inappropriate practice. You work hard at a convention (even if it's enjoyable work), and the conventions utilize you as a promotion for themselves. My family and three friends are attending all three days of Motor City expressly because you are going to be there.
Well I certainly hope MCC will offer you good food and a very positive experience! Actually, leave both to your loyal Dojo following

If the guests were being paid, that would theoretically attract more high quality guests, which would then certainly make me willing to pay more.Colin Solan wrote:But would you be willing to pay a higher admission price in order for all the guests to be paid?
Of course, if we're specifically talking about Stan, I'd pay A LOT more than $20 to see him. A legend is a legend, and it's hard to put a price limit on meeting one who means a lot to you.
Well, it is almost October. Do you have any updated information about the possibility of people in Atlanta getting a chance to see/meet you? If not as attendees at SCAD then what about a meal or even just a drink or something? It is still very early, and I don't even know what dates I will be in Atlanta. I have two other conventions I want to do in October, so I will not be in Georgia for very long.
Once dates are set, I will ask if it is all right to have a couple of guests sit in on my presentation, or maybe the faculty will arrange a signing somewhere.
I can't promise anything right now, though.

I just sent them an inquiry, and will let you know their response. This will be a very quick trip for me, because of my workload. The seminar runs Friday through Sunday. I get in Thursday night, and fly back to LA Sunday afternoon.JoKeR wrote:

The workshops are only for students, and are already full.
There is an introduction/q&a session Friday afternoon/evening. That is also closed to the public, but I can get you in as my guest. I was told this is fairly informal, and we would have an opportunity to talk if you like. If you are interested in attending, PM me your name and I will see that it is put on "the list". You would have to call when you get to the school, and someone will sign you in. I can send you the time and place when I answer your PM.
Besides myself, Skottie Young and Eric Canete will be there.
