Convention question

Post by nicholasdoyle »

Ok, so with Stan's (tentative) announcement of his attendance at the 2012 Heroes convention in Charlotte, I've begun planning my budget for the show. I know that Stan doesn't sell pages from Usagi (right?) but I would love to pick up a piece of original art - what sort of stuff does he normally bring with him? Is there a price range? I am really excited about this year's convention - I live in SC and have been asking the con organizers for the last few years to try to get Stan (and Sergio) to the show.

1. Stan does not sell the actual original art for any of the published story pages from Usagi, but he does occassionally sell pages from non-usagi stories.

2. He occassionally sells pages of original art which, for whatever reason, were neve used in a published story.

3. He does sell original cover art.

4. He sells original "convention drawings" or "pin-up" art such as is frequently published on the back covers of the Usagi comics.

5. Commission artwork is available occassionally, but it is very dependent upon his schedule, which is usually pretty busy.

A week or so before heading to a convention, Stan usually posts a message here on the forum asking people who are attending the convention what they would like him to bring along. Depending on the size (and location) of the convention, the amount of unrequested stuff he brings varies. He takes a lot to the big San Diego Con and relatively little to smaller conventions or foreign comic festivals.

Some of the other forum members might be able to give you an idea on current prices....

PS
Welcome to the Usagi Yojimbo Dojo! Everybody here is usually pretty friendly, but with the holidays season upon us, everyone seems to be a bit preoccupied..... :D

To have a good idea of Stan "convention art", have a look at the "Stan Sakai Art Gallery" section of the forum.

I attended the Long Beach Comic Con and Stan did a "quick sketch" for me. Price was $50:

I think the art Stan brought with him started at about $75-$100 and went up from there.

Remember, Stan will also sign books and do quick little sketches in them too.

Thanks for your help, everyone! I have no idea why I didn't think to check out the gallery. I guess it's time to start saving $$ now!

The rokurokubi hula gal commission in my gallery was $100 (and a nice surprise since I didn't expect Stan to find time before the con to do it)
