Evil Dead?

Post by Indiana Usagi »

Ok, this is a question for Mr. Sakai (or anyone who knows for SURE)...I brought up the similarities between Jei-san and the deadites from the "evil dead" films (pupil-less eyes, gnarly features, soul-taking, etc.), and I know that you've reference other things in UY before (Batman and Godzilla), so I'm wondering: is Jei (or Inazuma-Jei now) a reference or homage to Evil DEad?

Big time reference on Stan's part... Jei-San - from the movies... Kill him and he keeps on comin' back... what was it, Friday the Thirteenth or Halloween?

In Hallowe'en, the villain was puckish Canadian entertainer Micheal Myers.

Can't help it, I never was much of a horror movie / slasher movie fan... probably never saw more than one or two in either series.

Hmm Jei-san might be a homage.. but his whole regard to "The Gods" makes me think differently..

well, yeah, I never said it was a straight-up homage...otherwise usagi would be sporting his katana instead of a right hand and a sawed-off crossbow.

Heres my 0.004c (two cents times 2) for what its worth

The japanese romaji for JEI translates to the names of Jacob, Jay or Jason .

First, if I remember my early bible class from when I was a kid, Jacob had a dream where he saw a ladder ascending to heaven and heard the voice of God. He also has a brother, Esau, whom he tricked from his inheritence and blessing.

Perhaps there is an aspect of Jei's past that might open this thread up, maybe he did more than trick his brother and became insane or cursed by his actions.

Secondly, Jason (as in friday 13th) is the son of a killer, wrongly blamed for his mothers murders and killed for it who has returned from the grave, seemingly invulnerable and with a thirst for 'bad people' (albeit generally naked teenagers, but hey - its a living!!).

Perhaps Jei is the product of his parents past, wrongly accused and seeking vengeance for his murder, and those done by his mother.
Regards,

Steve

Jason was never blamed for his mothers murders.. He wasn't even alive when she committed them.. His mother had her head chopped off at the end of the first film...

He sort of came back to avenge her death if anything.. So basically he kills any teenagers that come to the camp.. good or bad..

http://usagiyojimbo.com/forum/viewtopic ... ht=jay+jei leads to a previous discussion on the topic, from some months ago.

If Freddy vs Jason is to be believed, Jason is evil because he's ugly. Nice moral, guys
