It's a fantasy/alternate history novel featuring a fictionalized version of Tomoe Gozen. Sounds kind of interesting.

Cool first book of a trilogy. Good stuff.

Jessica Amanda Salmonson is also a long time fan of jidai geki and chanbara films and wrote quite a few cool articles on various aspects of the genre back in the nineteen-eighties for the unfortunately short-lived "Martial Arts Movies" magazine.

She has a great web-site which includes hundreds of film reviews including a section devoted to samurai films....
