Dear Reader,
The power of "the mother" threw a strong Samurai not only off course but made Usagi lose his cool. How can a Samurai stay cool in battle but lose it when facing the force of "the mother'? Such is the force of "the mother".

She reminds me somewhat of Osugi (sp. ?) the mother of Musashi's friend Matahachi...

yeah she doese but osugi seems more bitter than usagis mother.

This issue while good was not one of my favorites. It does make me think of Usagi's relationship with his mother. Stan has shown us a little about Usagi's father, but never his mother. I imagine she would have been the dutiful samurai wife and she must have died when Usagi was very young.

So Stan if your reading this, what about it? What was Usagi's mother like?

Guess non of you have had to deal with a Matriach in the family. Its pretty common in Asian Family. Both my Grandmother's lived to a ripe age of 97 and 99!

Thanks for the great story Sensei Sakai Lady Hayashi reminded me of my father's mother!

Personally I think Usagi's mother either died while he was very young (infancy) or even died at childbirth, although I am unsure how common that was in 17th Century Japan. Usagi hasn't mentioned her at all during the series, nor has anyone asked him, not even in passing.

#78 was great, definitely one of the more funnier episodes. I was rather surprised that Usagi didn't draw his swords when the bandits first attacked him and the Mother. I realize that Usagi's learning that the keenest of blades are those kept IN their scabbards, but it wasn't like Usagi was just defending himself. He was hired by the old lady as a bodyguard/lackey, and no doubt was honor-bound to protect her. My expectation would be that Usagi would have sensed the two bandits attacking and slew them well before they were able to capture the Mother. Seemed to me Usagi risked the Mother's life to keep his swords sheathed and spare the two brigands... Stan, any feedback on this?
