If the non-commission watercolours are available to purchase on Stan's table, I can really see myself springing for one

Uh oh, I put in a request for one of those pieces and was going to ask for your assistance. Haven't heard back from Stan yet.Mayhem wrote:If the non-commission watercolours are available to purchase on Stan's table, I can really see myself springing for one
I sent an email to these guys to see how we could go about getting signed copies. Waiting for a reply.
The organizers may be able to ship out signed books for those who cannot attend. Also, if you are in the book and would like to participate in the signing but have not been contacted, let me know.

Hannah and Olivia took Sharon to see her oncologist yesterday to look over the results of Sunday's MRI. Her tumor has grown about 3 mm, which may account for the constant head pain she has been experiencing lately. While there she had a seizure, and the doctor escorted her over to Emergency. She was given seizure medication and observed for awhile. She is home again, sleeping comfortably. I am still in San Diego, and getting regular updates.
Besides Olivia, a friend from Hawaii, an RN, is helping out with Sharon this week while I am in San Diego.

I plan on being at Comic-con from Preview Night until close on Sunday, at booth 4906. Autographs are free, but if you want a quick Usagi head sketch along with it (such as in the new Sakai Project book) I will ask you to make a donation to the Japanese American National Museum (I will have a box on my table).

Great Preview Night at Comic-con. I sold 50 of the 100 copies of The Sakai Project in the three hours. My new sketchbook and the lithos are also selling very nicely. As I had said, autographs are free, but if you want a head sketch I will do one for a donation to the Japanese American National Museum. I raised $444 for them tonight. I hope the trend continues.

I brought down 100 copies of The Sakai Project book and sold out of them soon after the convention opened. Dark Horse also sold out of their stock. More will be coming in on Saturday! I am also out of 47 Ronin. Dark Horse has ordered more of that for us as well.
Great first day of the San Diego Comic-con.

Sharon is in ER again, with what they suspect is a respiratory infection.
She was given antibiotics and fluids, and is much more responsive now.

Well, we did it, you guys. In today's Honolulu Star-Advertiser: the story behind "The Sakai Project" and the people locally and nationally who contributed to the effort to help Stan and Sharon Sakai, brought to you by Wilma Jandoc Win and myself. I'm quite happy the powers that be ran our admittedly huge profile largely uncut (I think it's the longest print article Wilma and I have ever written together) and I LOVE Charlene Surridge Robinson's page design. Usagi even made Page A1!
SO many people to thank for helping make this story happen, including artists Audra Ann Furuichi, Theodore Lee, Jon J Murakami and Leiji Harlock; Tone Rodriguez and Bill Morrison with the Comic Art Professional Society, and Randy Stradley at Dark Horse. And, of course, a BIG thank you to Stan Sakai himself for taking time to comment in this busy Comic-Con season!
One final note: If you could, please keep Stan and Sharon in your thoughts/prayers; Sharon was admitted to the ER last night with a suspected respiratory infection. Stan reported this morning that she's "much more responsive" with antibiotic/fluid treatment, though, so here's hoping for the best in that situation.

I've got the "con cough" so did not visit Sharon at the hospital today. I don't have a cold, but my throat is sore and raw from talking all week at Comic-con. Hannah went to visit her today. Sharon is still fighting pneumonia. Her numbers are better, but she is very congested. Instead of breathing treatments every 4 hours, she gets it around the clock. She has pain in her head and neck. She sleeps most the time and is awake for only short periods. They are having a harder time communicating. She may have lost more of her eyesight. Please continue praying and sending good thoughts.

Kim Jung Gi is a fantastic artist from Korea. He and his team created Usagi Yojimbo T-shirts for sale, and donated the proceeds for Sharon's care. He also gave the original artwork, which I will forward to CAPS to include in a future auctions. Thank you!
The shirts were sold at Comic-Con. The art will be auctioned later. There is stil more art coming in to CAPS.
The T-shirts were only on sale at the San Diego Comic-con.

We just returned from visiting Sharon at the hospital. She was asleep most of the time. She awoke twice, but nodded back to sleep after about 5 minutes. Her blood pressure is good, but her heart rate is still very high. Her white blood cell count is down, so she is winning the battle over whatever infections she is battling.

I got some really neat stuff at Comic-con. People are so generous. I haven't had time to look over the books and sketchbooks that I got.
I did a watercolor cover of Hellboy and Usagi for the cover of the Events Guide, and gave the original to Mike Mignola. He gave me this wonderful drawing in return. I love Usagi's teeth!
I love food stuff. Wasabi and Spam flavored macadamia nuts, Hawaii shortbread cookies, macadamia nut Kona coffee, a bunch of Texas BBQ sauces, Coconut coffee from Trinidad, macadamia nut candies, and Austrian chocolates.

Tone Rodriguez and I were interviewed by the Pasadena Star News about todays group signing at Frank & Son. There are a lot of photos, including a really goofy one of me peeking over what looks like the edge of the table. The only major mistake in the article is our ages: I am 61 and Sharon is a young lass of 60.

Stuart Ng Books has listed the Usag Sketchbooks for sale. He is the only dealer that has them. They usually go for 2-3 times the actual $10 cost on eBay.
Stuart has Sketchbooks 4-8 and 10-11 currently in stock.
Juanjo's work is amazing. He was sitting right across from me at Comic-con. Super nice guy.
I particularly like 9. It has a step-by-step look at how I create a story from outline to thumbnails and it has a new 6-page story.
Sketchbooks 1-3 are sold out, but I will have the rest with me at the Boston Comic-con this weekend.

Sharon was scheduled to be discharged two days ago, but has taken a slight turn for the worse. Her white cell count is back up indicating that her body is fighting an infection or something. They are doing more tests to determine what it is. Her new medications completely wipe her out, and she sleeps most the day, though she does waken for a few minutes when we are there so she knows we are around. We don't know when she will be coming home.
I am still planning on going to Boston tomorrow.

Hannah reported that Sharon's white cell count which was going down, indicating that her body is winning the fight against whatever infection it is fighting, has gone up again, to the levels where it was when she was admitted into the hospital two weeks ago. This is such a set back as we were looking forward to her homecoming very soon.

I am back in California, after a wonderful weekend at the Boston Comic-con. Sharon's white cell count, which was as high as 16, is now down to 11 indicating that she is winning the fight against whatever infection is in her body. If this trend continues she may be able to return home as early as today (Monday).

Sharon will be discharged from the hospital today! Her white cell count is back up to 14 and they still do not know why it has been fluctuating so much. However, there is nothing they do here that we can't do at home. Sharon still sleeps most the time, but this may be her new baseline. Sharon really wants to come home, and so do we.

Ladies and gentlemen, CAPS is happy to announce that TWENTY-ONE artists will be attending a signing of our "Sakai Project" book this Saturday, August 16th, at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles as a fundraiser for Stan & Sharon Sakai. Details are on the flyer.
This will be the last signing event that CAPS is organizing for our book. CAPS is not a retailer, so we do not intend to make books available for sale online after the event. You must attend, or have a friend get one for you. Thanks for your understanding.
We are working on some other surprises about the signing throughout the week, so keep checking back with us here on Facebook!

Sharon is home! Her white cells are still high, but there is really nothing more that can be done in the hospital. She sat up in a cardiac chair today, the first time she had actually sat up in a week.

The Boston Comic Con was great. My table was an end cap, between the beautiful and delightful cosplayer Ivy Doom Kitty and the just as beautiful and delightful Sergio Aragones. In the down times when their autograph lines criss-crossed in front of my table cutting off access, I did some watercolor drawings. There was a lot of down time, which was okay with me as I had sold about everything I had brought. The watercolors still have a little work to be done, but are about 90% complete.

Many of you know that I had a donation box for the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles on my table at the San Diego Comic-con and at the Boston Comic-con. Autographs in The Sakai Project and other books were free, but if you wanted a quick head sketch I asked for a donation of any amount to the museum. People were very generous. There were a few $1s and folded $1s, but so many of the bills were 20's. There were a few 50's and more 20's folded together. One guy donated $80 and, after he saw the drawing I had done, added another $100. Today I went to the museum and gave them a check for $4,119! Thank you all!
There is also an exhibit of tattoos that I had wanted to see. It is terrific. I am also waiting for October when the Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary exhibit opens.
Showing off my ink.

It has been awhile since I had updated Sharon's health. She is still at home, and is failing by small degrees. We had the option of admitting her to the hospice program, but I chose Palliative Care as that gives us a bit more flexibility with admitting her to the hospital. She has had to be admitted 6 times in the past 5 months. For all intents, she is blind and deaf, breathes with a tracheostomy tube, and is fed through a G-tube. We opted to discontinue chemo therapy as the physical effort to get her to the hospital is too great. Besides, the brain tumor she has is so rare that there is no procedure for it, and it is doubtful the chemo is effective. She is bedridden and sleeps about 22 hours a day. When she is awake, she is up for about 15-20 minutes at a time. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes.
